my school works on an A-day/B-day block schedule so we take all eight classes all year long - finals usually hurt my year grade

ECs- Varsity Tennis, Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society), Junior Class Council, National Society of Black Engineers, HOSA(won 1st place in sports medicine regional competition, 3rd place in state competition), Unity Club, Outward Bound alum, athletic trainer, Junior Marshal (reserved for top 5% of class), National Honor Society, founder of Campus Greens chapter at my school (organization associated with the Green Political Party), Spanish Honor Society, Muslim Student Association (I am not a Muslim but I like helping the Muslim members of my community, especially here in the south) – I am obviously not active in all of these right now - this is a list of the clubs that I have joined and been active in over the past 3 years

hoping to go into urban planning/revitalization and so i'd be applying to berkeley's department of city and regional planning

out of 9,446 admits for fall 2005, 276 were african americans

you're a high-achieving african american

berkeley's proclaimed #1 goal is "inclusion"

you do the math

looks like an admit to me -(member of Cal class '06)

Find a way to slip in your ethnicity and it may just make up for your low GPA/average test scores. EC's look good from what I skimmed. And make sure they know that your rank is high despite the low GPA. Top it off with some nice essays and you have a good chance.

I think you must keep in mind how your school places. If the top kids at your school go to schools comparable to Berkeley, i would say you have a good chance. How well do the top kids at your school place, particularly those with similar stats? You have very interesting interests, so if you write really good essays, and kids from your school place well, you have a good chance, i would think. Also, the fact that you're interested in a very atypical major probalby helps your situation, as does the fact that you're an "underrepresented minority." You should probably retake the SAT, unless you have phenominal SAT II scores, and you might want to consider retaking it anyway, although some schools, including the UC system, say they put much more weight on the SAT II subject tests than the SAT I. Being from out of state, however, they will look at you with much more scrutiny than a regular california applicant, which is relative strict already. Good luck.

bumpetybump

True. Slip in your ethnicity and you might be accepted.
Your GPA and SAT scores are below average.

Ur in man. What does "bumpety bump" mean?

when a new post is made in a thread the thread is automatically placed back at the top of the list of threads for the school...if your thread gets far enough away from the top it usually won't get any responses because people tend to only respond to the first few threads...i use bumpetybump to bump my thread back to the top...thanks for the response dude

Hahaha, thats clever. Bumpety Bump.

bumpetybump master

You are out of state right?

yeah...I'm out of state North Carolina

well then it might be a bit harder but as long as you slip in ur race, ull be fine...i think

and if u don't get in u can appeal anyways

be sure to mention your race somewhere in your essays. just from a regular white/asian admit though (in my opinion) i think your stats are too low.

3.45 unweighted, average is 3.81
4.12 weighted, average is 4.24

i think clubs are weak EC's. you should have some but sports, student government, community service, job (if your paying for your family, not for your car), etc are more biggies.

You're applying to a weird major (probably good for you) and high in your class (good for you). How does your school fair at getting kids into tought to get into schools?

yes the major will help. but if you REALLY want it to help, you'll change it to african american studies. that way they'll see that ur proud of your heritage and they'll LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE that, trust me.

bumper bumpit

with your kinda scores, rigor of schedule, and URM backround- u should be looking at HYP.........berkeley might in fact be harder to get in in your case actually, because you're out of state. I have a friend with better scores than yours actually get into stanford and yale, but did not get into Berkeley. just goes to show that berkeley is extremely harsh on out-of-staters :-</p>

yeah and... there is just a chance that berkeley may not consider your ethnicity beause they technically do not do affirmative action in the books. you might have a better chance at HYPMS in that sense. honestly, if there wasnt affirmative action, i do not think you would be accepted into berkeley from the stats here.
