Since you're out of state, you're chances are plain bad. They would be decent if you were in-state, but out of state those scores just aren't high enough. SATs are very important to UC schools.

Edit: Let me clarify. For in-state, I'd say 1300-1400, top 10% would give a decent chance of getting in. For out of state, you'd probably want 1500 and be in the top 2%. If you could do better on the SAT and rock the SAT IIs (750+ on whichever you take) and have good AP scores, you may have a shot.

The University of California system is home of the Bakke v. Bd of Education decision and Ward Connerly, both of whom permanently put the nail in the coffin of using race as a determining factor. I highly doubt that it will make a difference. (I attended Berkeley in the early 80's). I think the essay will make a difference however. The combination of your EC's and diverse point of view should allow you to stand out as a candidate over the vast number of essays from Asian and white students that make up the majority of the student body.

GO FOR IT! I wish you well. And pledge Alpha once you're there!

'06!!!

whoa! what's with all the affirmative action hinting? that's a terrible thing to say, that someone only gets into a school because of their race.

truth be told, GPA is a bit weak, SAT (1) looks good but again, SAT (2 Writing) is a bit weak. dont get your hopes up for UCLA, but killer essays may be your ticket to Cal.
