Being in the city, I want to know how often people do things on campus and how often people go out... and examples of what people might do typically, though I know it varies from person to person. Do share. I also know NYC is expensive, how much does all this going out and such cost you people? Including transportation and such...

Nothing? I'm just asking about general student life, I'm sure someone can share personal experiences...

When I visited, a lot of people went to the bars and partied in the city.

i mean its new york! you can do anything

As a first year my daughter spent a great deal of time exploring the city with her friends...she used TimeOut New York as a resource to find openings, cheap eats, comedy club listings and the like.

http://www.timeoutny.com/newyork

As a third year student she still goes out but knows the city well enough (and what she likes to do downtown) that she is a bit more selective in her choices. She also goes to parties on campus quite a bit.

BTW - Tickets to Jon Stewart and Conan O'Brien are free!

There are plenty of people with money who will burn several hundred dollars in a single weekend. If you want to live it up in NYC, be prepared to eat in restaurants w/ $30+ entrees and hang out at fancy bars/clubs with $15+ drinks.

Don't waste your time (not to mention your money) on $30+ per meal restaurants. There are hundreds of great restaurants that are much more affordable. Maybe it would be something to experience once, but for my money, I'd prefer spending $2 for a great slice of pizza or $5 for Chinese.

Or you can go in the middle. I find that many normal to funky restaurants that I go to have usually 10-12 dollar entrees.

Shweet. I heard that there is a lot of bar hopping and such...

But what do people do on campus?

Does Columbia have free tickets for students to a lot of events? The Jon Stewart and Conan O'Brien tickets for Columbia students sounds really awsome, but do they also have stuff like Mets tickets and tickets to SNL and other stuff that you can get with a Columbia student ID card?
