Well, A LOT of people from my school applied, and a couple in my honors and AP classes, yet most of them were rejected! they have like.. 3.8 GPA's and in range or higher SAT's.

passion, you simply have to show it with 40,000 applicants, apparently I didn't have enough for my first major choice.

It looks like GPA was the most important factor... Hardly anyone below a 3.8 got in, it looks like.

haha i dont know about that...i got in out of state w/what i think turned out to be a 3.6 UC GPA. but i took all AP classes, so maybe that helped a bit. and my sat I was 2100-not spectacular...and my essays-omg dont even get me started they sucked so much. so really i think it was a fluke.

I don't think there's been any divergence from the old criterea. And 3.8 is high... I had a 3.4 UC GPA and i got in.

I think it was more than GPA, like rigor of coursework through high school.. got accepted with a 3.67 UC GPA and 1810 SAT I. Took 6 AP's 10th/11th.

i got accepted with probebly a 3.2, 1600 SAT.

3.67 UC gpa
1990 SAT I
730 IIC
690 chem
three years of science in 10th and 11th grade
100+ hours of community service
tennis team
badminton team

they said i was a "high achieving applicant" and said that im in the honors program

major: cheme

wow tennis and badminton? how did you do that, i was in varsity tennis 4years and our entire school made fun of the badminton team. (all the skinny asian kids).

im asian myself, shame on me.

It seems like it was a very holistic review, and GPA was obviously not the deciding factor, at least not with me.

3.4 ish GPA
30 ACT
700 Lit
660 U.S.
Captain and 3rd year member of Academic Decathlon
Leadership positions, awesome community service
Very good essays

i thought gpa was the most important factor, since my friend with a 3.5-3.6 gpa/high sat/lots of ec's didn't get in, and my other friend with a 3.9 gpa/low sat/no ec's got in, but it seems that lots of people with low gpa's got in.

i got in with a 3.4 no APs and undecided major, my essay had good content but the had alot of typos after i re read them, i think im the worst applicant that got in this year

^ good jobs, sounds like me.. haha cept i took a few ap's

Key Factors: GPA and SAT

If you have what they're looking for in those categories, you move to the "great shot" bracket. Then it comes down to the EC's, essays, awards, etc. for tiebreakers since there were 40000 applicants for so few spots.

what was the freshmen aadmit rate ?

probably around 50%.

they took on 20,000 freshmen =/ ?

It's hard to say about teh criteria. If you're black you have a high chance of getting in. Trust me, diversifying the student population is still part of the adcom's agenda. But what really surprised me is that there are a lot of Asians here at UCSB more than ever. Most of them used to pick UCI over UCSB.
