So, what do you plan to do with your awesome ____ degree? I see so many different majors around the boards, from business, econ, phil, english, classics, art, comm, and so forth.

Do you plan on doing something completely unrelated to your degree? Get an MBA, JD, or other graduate degree? Or fish out for jobs? Or, gain some more experience with internships? Or, buy a pair of round the world tickets and just travel your heart out before settling into the so-called "real world" ? :D

I'm an English major and I've always been interested in journalism and publishing. I know NYC is a prime place to be for publishing, but I'd also like to try out some other things and dabble a bit, if that makes sense.

Anyway, feel free to share, everyone :)

I plan on going to grad school. I’d love to travel the world as well – but I’d be just as happy if I went to grad school in another country (like the UK).

Honestly I don’t know what I want to do with my life when I graduate. Most life science majors like me want to get their MD, Pharm. D, etc. But I want to do something that no one else has done…

Apply to vet school and hope to get in.

Aside from my Animal Major, I’m also thinking about maybe either double-majoring or minoring in Computer Science (and work with computers) or Music Performance (and teach voice).

PhD in philosophy or a PhD in Ed. Administration or Policy.

I think it’d be awesome to own (ideally) or at least partially operate a university! :D

Emil! What happened to psych??

^woah, nice plans, emil! :D

Tbh I feel a bit…lost about what my career path will be as I too want to dabble in different areas. I’ve considered an M.S. in Counseling at the college level, toyed with the idea of getting a J.D., or even just moving to LA to find work in the entertainment industry. I definitely think internships will help emphasize and develop my interests, so I’ll do as many as possible.

amsstory said what I would have said

With my Anthropology/Foreign languages degree… I plan to go on to grad school and get a PhD… and become an archaeologist/professor/indiana jones.

@ mytime: Thanks! Your plans all sound great too. As you get more into upper div classes and do internships/jobs along the way, you’ll definitely further develop your career plans. Granted, I’m still largely undecided :p, but I know that I have a lot of school ahead of me, and that’s actually what I want.

@ Ella: Believe it or not, I loved Psych back in CCC, but I’ve now taken 11 psych courses throughout my college career. I’m not even talking prereqs - I mean straight psych. I don’t know if I’ve overdone it along the way, but psychology just doesn’t interest me the way it used to. It’s sad when I think to myself that my statistics class was more interesting to me than my psych classes. Well, it was psych stats to be fair, but nearly fully focused on math.

As for Philosophy and Education, these are two things I am currently and have always been pretty fascinated with. I loved the Phil classes I took in CCC, and read many interesting books covering everything from Western phil to Chuang Tzu to Krishnamurti, etc. And as for Education, I’ve come to realize that I love schooling and education in general. My CC post count probably reflects that :p. I really enjoy helping people get in and things like that too. I was a terrible high school student (I mean really bad), and I think in a way it may help to fail big time at first in order to realize what is important in school and also in life. Of course, not everyone fails or needs to fail. I’m just saying that it’s helped me appreciate everything so much more than I would have otherwise. All this said, I am personally indebted to the education and CCC system, particularly in California.

I could definitely envision myself working in a university, either as a prof. of philosophy or education or as an administrator.

Emil, are you switching back to Philosophy?

As a history student, I’m hoping to work in archives and historic preservation after obtaining my undergraduate degree. I’m hoping to apply for a few relevant internships for next summer that will allow me to slowly transition into this setting.

Following gaining a few years of experience in the field, I want to earn a doctorate in history and teach as a professor. :)

mytime09:

We have very similar plans! I really like the idea of counseling, law, and the entertainment industry as well. I’m hoping that a double major in English and communications studies (if I can get in) will really help in all those areas and more. I’m also really interested in journalism (it was my dream at one point) and there are other things that I really consider seriously such as cultural anthropology or linguistics. I agree that internships and also just meeting and talking to other students will help to develop what I really want to do with my degree.

:)

Haha @ Manachai. Indiana Jones is a good career goal :P

Become a translator or teach English in S. Korea or Japan to young elementary school children.

^
That’s super cool! I was raised in South Korea and have family in Japan, interesting! There’s actually a lot of fellowships from Korea/Japan that will pay you to do that!

I’m still actually debating whether going to Graduate School to get my Ph.D in Psychology or go to Medical School and get my M.D. for Psychiatry here at UCLA. If I ended up getting my Ph.D I would want to teach for a while and then get my private practice as a Psychologist and if I went to Medical School…well I’d be there for a while, lol.

go to grad.school, get a PHD, be a professor (all much harder than it actually sounds lol)

^
Right now I work for the Graduate Department in Psychology here and I’m in the process of reading about actually getting your Ph.D and all the process that needs to be done…it’s tough! Either route I go I will have my hands full, lol. But the cool thing is that if I decide the Ph.D route, I can keep my job here and secure my two paychecks a month, lol.

@IndieRocknRoll awesome I too plan to study English and Communication @ Davis in a major/minor fashion. Ideally, I’d like to try out different things, or as many as possible, and see what I like best. Also UCLA is an amazing place to study English and Comm. And the perfect place to be if you do end up working in the entertainment industry :D

@ deanza: I’ve begrudgingly decided to stick with psychology. I don’t dislike it or anything; I’m just sort of tired of it :p. If I were to switch to philosophy, I would have to stay at Berkeley another year.

And yeah, beyphy, getting a PhD will be really difficult…but first to get into grad school in the first place lol.

@sweetlacecharm, i want to teach english in korea also, looks like a lot of fun, have you checked out [Kpop, Korean Food, and Life in Korea - Eat Your Kimchi](http://eatyourkimchi.com/?) its a couple of canadians who teach english in south korean, one of their videos i saw made me think teaching would be really fun, even though there isn’t much teaching going on in the video.
