It is quite overpriced. It has one program that is well-known and where the student quality is good but for the others, unless you’re die-heard set on a Catholic school and can’t get into another one in/near the city, you’re better off at CUNY Queens.

My S was accepted and just did an overnight which he felt was very well put together. They took great care to pair him with a student who was a good match and in programs my S was interested in. Tuition is expensive but could be considered overpriced at many schools! He got a very nice scholarship and is being considered for their Catholic Scholars program.

He liked the students he met, felt they were a good mix of kids who were social but there to learn. Campus is nice enough, somewhat urban but defined. Close to Manhattan with basketball games at the garden. Lots of commuters but a nice residential village as well.

You should visit to see if it’s a good fit. We live pretty close and were surprised at how much we liked it! It’s one of my S’s top choices and yes, he got into other schools.

@myos1634 and @sandkmom thank you both for your responses. I am really interested in attending here so I wanted to get as much insight from people who have been at the school or students as I could. My dad is a fanatic about their basketball team, I just wanted to see if academically they were as well known as for their athletics.

My son is currently a junior here. He dormed the first two years and now commutes. He applied to a number of other schools including NYU and Fordham but felt St. John’s was the one for him after he visited. He feels now he made a great decision. He received a very generous scholarship and has had excellent professors. He is also in the honors program which offers challenging courses and cultural opportunities. He had the opportunity to study abroad in Rome for a semester essentially for the same cost as being on campus. He has met many students there who are serious about their studies and who also enjoy the service opportunities St. John’s offers. This is not to say that St. John’s is for everyone. You have to see what feels right.Like any college you also have to find the right people to associate with. Obviously, in a large university there will always be those students who do not take college seriously but to me it seems like if you take advantage of the opportunities St. John’s offers you can be very successful. This can be seen by the many successful alumni in various fields.
