When people hear how many hours of community service I have done, they ask, “Do you get paid?” When I say no, they wonder why I do it. I tell them it’s because I like to help people.
Many think that community service is just something you are forced to do for school. To me, community service is a way of giving back. Because I grow as a person each time I do community service.
I have volunteered of community service at a local elementary school, and I was assigned a group of 15 children, between the ages of 5-8. I helped children to complete their homework assignments, and spend quality time with them while their parents work late. I read to the children and played with them when their parents do not have the time. They made a deep impression on me.
Volunteer work was a gratifying experience. I still remember the first week at the elementary school was a little awkward. As soon as I walked go there, I did not know any of the kids or what to talk to them about. A teacher asked me to help them tie their shoes. So, one by one, they came into the hallway and I helped them with their shoes. This gave me the opportunity to talk to them just one-on-one and see what they were like. It was great! At that time, I found that they were very friendly and talkative. Also, I introduced myself to them. They always say hello for me ,and I receive many hugs. They make me feel extremely important just being with them. Since then, I know I am a significant role model and a great influence for these growing children.
Two days later ,I came back to help out again and all of the kids were really excited to see me. It made me smile to know that the kid’s all looked forward to me coming to visit them. That day, I actually got to help out and interact with the kids. It was fun to help the children learn something that I had already gone through in school. I could tell they enjoyed reading with me,too. I think volunteering at elementary School was a great way to donate my time.
There were many things I liked about this rewarding experience. I want other everyone to experience the excitement of volunteer. Volunteer work is for anybody and everybody, and not only makes you feel good about yourself ,but at the same time, you could help other people. That is why I like to volunteer .I feel if you choose the right place to do your community service. It’s definitely not a waste of time. If you enjoy what you’re doing, it’s almost as if it’s a hobby or another job. At least, I think my community service experience proof of that. Volunteering can made me a better person. Anyway, I will always persist on, even I go to college in the future.
