What do you think?

I am currently a marketing intern at my university. They approached me about staying and working full time this summer, however, that I would be taking over a position as 'Project Manager' for the summer while the real project manager is out.

This sounds like great experience, that will add project managing skills to my resume,

However there are 3 negatives
1. I wanted to get away this summer (intern in a different state)
2. They would be paying me the rate I normally receive as an intern (min wage) but I would be doing 100x the work I normally do
3. I am still waiting to hear back from some big summer internships, three of which relate to my dream job

They need an answer from me within a week and a half ...(unlikely that I will hear back from my other internships by then)

Do I take it or leave it?
How valuable would 3 months of project managing be?

A few questions come up right away…

When do you think you will hear back from your other internships?

Could you ask for an extension on your response for the PM job?

Could you ask for a higher wage since you will be working more and doing higher skilled labor?

If the answers to those questions are not what you hope they are, are you willing to decline an offer without another offer in hand?

If it’s a “real” project manager role, take the money and run. And what chrisw said about #3.

I really am unsure, the two I want most closed their job postings 1-2 weeks ago. Another one I really want is accepting applications through March 31st. At this point I don’t think I would have an offer for another 6 weeks…

I asked for an extension (originally they wanted to know by next Friday, they said they might be able to give me until 3/31)

I already asked for a higher wage if I took on that position (even if it was just a temp increase for the summer only) and they said they cant do that

This is the million dollar question, at this point I might be steering towards yes (yes as in declining it)

@PolarBearVsShark if they would have been willing to increase the pay at all I think I would be more interested in accepting

I also feel like it would be more convenient for them for me to accept (then they don’t have to recruit, go through the hiring process of someone new, train them, and also wouldn’t have to pay someone what the job is actually worth)

You’re handling it as well as you can, given the circumstances. Your next step is to contact the companies that have interviewed you already, and see when they might be able to give you a response. I agree that the one accepting applications is probably a lost cause unless you do decline the PM offer.

If you do decide to decline the summer PM offer, would you want to go back in the fall? Would they take you back? Would you care if you couldn’t go back?

@chrisw
I don’t have a contact name, phone, or email to follow up on the position I want that just closed (I submitted my application online). How could I follow up with them? (I do have the main corp office number)

Yes, I would want to return in the fall and they said I could work there next year either way.
