<p>Hi I was recently hired by a company for intern, they have sent me there background check form..this is my first internship opportunity..so in the references column i have provided my project team members in college as references, now my question is do they call up my peers or just do criminal check and leave . How does it actually work?</p>

<p>I it depends on the company. Most just do a criminal record and maybe a credit check. They may do nothing at all. </p>
<p>I own a financial services firm so I would require a full check. Since I deal with federal agencies and international businesses overseas, I also check the backgrounds of clients and vendors. I check everyone against a federal database of “restricted persons”. I also may call to confirm former employment, contract engagements, and relationships. You have to be thorough.</p>

<p>They may run your name through some lists- international, financial, check Facebook, call your references, ask for additional references. As above, depends on what your internship entails.</p>
<p>For an international student, they may run a criminal background check against the police records in your country to check for any misdemeanor (driving violations, DUI ) and felonies you may have been convicted. They will also do a credit check on you.
The most important thing for any employment verification is full disclosure because with computer technology, you’d be surprised how much information they can access all over the world.</p>
<p>Relax its not serious if you know that you didn’t do anything wrong. I have had a background check done on me by a job and I requested that I get the results in the mail. It was pretty much a waste of paper :)</p>

<p>if they even do a report, you’ll have to ask for it. That’s a big if. </p>
<p>Wait till after you’ve been hired and working there a couple of days before you ask. Otherwise they’ll think you’re crazy and they wont hire you.</p>
<p>They may say no because they don’t want to make their methods public. If there is some sort of document it will probably be a checklist of each thing they look at with yes or no answers that they checked each item. The document will probably be signed indicating someone checked your background. That’s it. There will not be detail about what they found unless you failed the background check.</p>
<p>This is probably the least paid attention to part of the review process by everyone… Except you.</p>

<p>In business, questions are good and appreciated. The key is to know when to ask and when not to ask. The problem is that business people (and politicians) try to read between the lines. If you ask a question at the wrong time it raises red flags. Like when I asked you why you were sweating the background check. The question you asked and the request for a report on your background check can mean three things. First, you’re just curious. Second, and most likely, is that you have something to hide or something to be concerned about. Third, what ever reason the investigators can come come up with just to be suspicious. That suspicion can cost you a job among other things. Particularly when they are comparing 2 candidates.</p>
