I had an interview for RD in January. The interviewer told me that he was going to recommend me for admission. What’s wrong with asking the interviewer regarding a late interview? I think the interviewer should tell the interviewee if he/she will be recommended…

Is it safe to say that this applies to other Ivies/highly selective colleges as well?

I do not know if any of this applies to other selective schools or Ivies. I know that it is common practice for some schools that the interviewers have more information on applicants. It is possible that “better” applicants may get first shot at interviews. That is not the case with Yale.

Nothing your interviewer says about “recommending” you has any meaning. We give a numerical score between 1 and 9 along with a narrative report that really has much more value. I know of 8’s that have been rejected and 4’s that are accepted so an interviewer can’t really get someone in and may not be able to keep someone out even if he/she has a strong impression. All of us have felt we interviewed an amazing applicant at some time of whom we wrote detailed and glowing praise and shared their disappointment with rejection.
