What does middle 50% mean...

<p>Lets say a site lists a schools middle 50% as 920-1240 range of middle 50%</p>

<p>What does that mean? does that mean the schools average is 1080 (The average between the two)</p>

<p>Yes, it just means that the middle 50% of students got between a 920 and a 1240, so the average isn't necessarily 1080, if for ex. there are 100 people in that 50% and theoretically 75 of those people got exactly 1240 and 25 got 920, then the average wouldn't be 1080, and the average would take into account the bottom and top 25% as well.</p>

<p>I think of it as 25% scored higher than that range, and 25% scored lower.</p>

<p>No, it's as if they lined up everyone by SAT score, took out the middle 50% and out of the 50% the highest scorer has a 1240 and the lowest a 920.</p>

<p>20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30</p>

<p>Would that mean the middle 50% of the ACT score was 23-27?</p>
