hi, im an 11 grader with 4.0 GPA(highest you can go in canada although i finished 4 APs with all 5s in grade 10) and today I recieved a email from University of Chicago's associate director of admissions, telling me that even though im early in the process I should consider UChicago, does this mean anything? is this personalized or computer generated from a filter? How did they know about me?(I did my SATs recently so the scores arent out yet, although maybe U of C came to my highschool and it was principal's recommendation?)Thanks in advance.

They got your email from SAT. It’s just to get more applicants (and thus a lower acceptance rate). It is sent to thousands.

UChicago is the undisputed champion of sending spammy letters to entice people to apply. They obtain your information from College Board and other testing agencies. It’s largely through mass-email tactics like these that they managed to drop their acceptance rate from 40% to less than 10% in a decade (and yes, the applicant pool used to be self-selecting but still).

If you’re interested, you should definitely apply, but don’t think of it as a likely letter or anything. They basically send it to everyone, haha.

Good luck!

My daughter has been getting letters from uChicago and Vanderbilt since she was 13, when she took her first AP exam. Coincidence? Nope. They buy names from college board, as do almost all colleges.

Wait until PSAT results hit their computer system. Then your mailbox will be filled every day!

It means they got your name from a list. Both of my kids got tons of letters, brochures etc. from UChicago and one of them was not have close to having the stats to get in.
