"Thank you for your application...At this time, a decision has been delayed on your admissibility for the Fall 2006 semester. A review of your app has been made; however, a final decision will not be reached until later in our processing year. Due to the large # of applicants for the # of places available, we can only grant admission to a limited # of students upon first review...As a delayed candidate, we hope to be able to review your application and notify you in writing of a final decision by early April..."

OK. So I'm guessing "delayed candidate" = deferred! At the very end they also said "we encourage you to explore other educational options." ='(
Does this mean they're expecting my midyear grades? Mines haven't yet been sent to Michigan because my report card wasn't so hot: an 88 avg (out of 100) with a lot of 85's and 88's and only one A. I'm going to have a terribly low Michigan GPA (my original Mich GPA was 3.5 and my school's one a 3.6, btw). With those grades, should I even have my midyear report sent out? If not will they automatically think I failed and reject me? I'd also like to update my resume because I'm a finalist for an internship very specific to my major. Any one got this same letter?

Thanks

I believe the "we encourage you to explore other educational options" line means you don't limit your options to just Michigan, since you may not get in.

my son's deferral letter specifically used the word "deferred" and said "we hope your interest in Michigan continues".

Wow this crap is complicated. I dont understand what's goin on.

There seems to be three types of letters circulating:

1) delayed, like the OP
2) deferred, like spikemom's son
3) a letter requesting semester grades that does not say delay nor defer and has not reached a final decision

I can't make any sense out of these different letters. Perhaps it has something to do with which school you applied to i.e. different schools send different types of deferrals?

CCRunner123, that's a good point. I applied to the School of Kinesiology, while it seems many of the posters here have applied to the other schools, especially LSA. Maybe they send out different kinds of deferral letters like you said.

Spikemom, my letter also said "we hope your interest in Michigan continues," but did not use "deferred." What school did your son apply to?

DS applied to LSA. His letter was 4 paragraphs, said his app would "be reevaluated on a regular basis". For whatever that's worth :-)
Really we're not holding our breath
