We all know the things that make Brown fantastic. What are the things you don’t like and would change if you could?

Low acceptance rates.

I wish we could just make money magically appear when we need it. Some departments are just generally underfunded, which is partly due to endowments and partly due to alumni gifts - although the boldly brown campaign is trying to change a lot of that. Other than that, I don't think many undergrads would trade their college experience for anywhere else. It's no wonder we're consistently rated one of the schools with the happiest students (#2 this year??... says who?)

My D-- first-year-- was home this weekend as a surprise for my birthday :) and I asked her what she and/or her friends didn't like about Brown. She thought for a minute and said, "Nothing." Then she smiled. I can't imagine that it is truly perfect or will be perfect for all four years. But so far... it's pretty darn close!

what is religious life like at Brown?

we worship drugs and alcohol on a daily basis

You can read about this in the Brown Daily Herald, October 23, 2007 issue. Apparently, PBS was filming on campus for their show "Religion and Ethics Newsweekly," to be broadcast early November, according to the BDH. I haven't seen it listed in the TV listings yet.

Edit: Not the part about drugs and alcohol!

What do you mean what is religious life like? Much like religious life anywhere, it varies greatly from person to person and religion to religion.

Polska, here's a link to the Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life at Brown which may hopefully answer your question.

Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life - Brown University

ok b/c i really think i love brown but the fact that the campus might be too overwhelmingly "agnostic" might cause a few problems, im trying to watch my wording

It only lasted 4 years!

What kind of problems do you foresee?

it just seems to me that the brown environment includes many outspoken people who do not believe in God and this would certainly bother me if i ahd to see it on a daily basis or even by all the professors
i say this not actually being there so idk

I don't think that you should be concerned that you'll be confronted about your beliefs by either professors or the students here. I don't know where you're getting the sense that they're an outspoken group on campus, I haven't seen that in my time here.

That being said, part of being at a university is being confronted and tested constantly on every level-- intellectually, morally, theologically, etc.

As the Brown mission statement states:
The mission is to seek "to help students learn to think in a range of disciplines, to practice habits of self-reflection and empathy, and to develop the moral convictions that will guide them later in life."

I can't possibly imagine it being uncomfortable here if you have beliefs, I personally believe in God and have no trouble.

There are quite a few student groups, Brown/RISD Hillel, College Hill for Christ, etc that are centered around religious issues as well...

From today's Daily Herald...

sounds great! thank you so much modest!

Most of CIT (the main CS building) is locked to most undergrads (those who are not TAs/working on some inhouse project) after 5:30 PM.

Intro CS courses should be improved.

Dumb CIT elevators.

The Banner system.

Too much rain.

CS36 (systems programming) cancelled.

You have access to only your dorm building not to others.

Libraries should be improved.

Chicken fingers are cooked only on Fridays.

No M&M's at the V-dub

Gate has stopped stacking cookies

Gate opens too late on weekends - 4 PM.

V-dub closed on weekends.

PS - Ofcourse there are a large amount of things that are just great (for instance program housing, lots of computers available if you need them, etc.)

Intro CS improved? Those are some of hte most loved courses at Brown.

CS15 was a blast...

I'm a parent of a current student, and an alum. My two beefs right now: the size of residential units is much too big (and a subset of that, there need to be more residential counselors), and the safes permanently installed in the freshmen rooms need to go.

@modestmelody - I'm taking CS17 but my friend who's taking 15 said that it was mostly just graphics with not as much emphasis on algorithms.

As for 17, it's a bit too easy and slow plus imo, the whole course should be taught in Scheme (a dialect of lisp). Right now it's taught in Scheme and OCaml.
