I’ve seen this topic on other boards and it provides any interesting perspective. I visited Ole Miss with my son, and we both loved it. But no place is perfect, so what do you think??
student parking is a bit tight. No need for a car, everything is close.
Agreed @upperarlington!
Our son is an Ole Miss freshman and generally likes it. But from my point of view, transportation to the airport is a bit of a pain.
You would think there would be a lot of private shuttle companies competing for student business for flying home on breaks, but I’m only aware of two companies that do it: One operates shuttle vans, and the other is a car service. Both cost about the same, i.e. $85 each way.
The school owns some shuttle vans, which are cheaper – $135 if you go round trip – but their availability is spotty. They are not reserved specifically for student transportation. So, for example, the shuttle vans are not available to pick up my son from the airport at the end of Spring Break, because there’s some kind of a conference going on on campus. So he has to use one of the more expensive private companies for his return trip.
My older son attends a small liberal arts college in Virginia (Christendom), which is about the same distance from the Washington DC airport, as Oxford is from Memphis, i.e. about an hour and 15 minute drive. This school operates shuttle vans exclusively for the purpose of driving students to and from the airport on break, and they only charge $30 each way. I really can’t understand why Ole Miss doesn’t consider this a worthwhile service to provide. Or, at the very least, I think it would be nice if they reserved the shuttle vans for students during breaks when transportation is essential.
