Anyone have opinions on letting your child have a vehicle? The parking is typical for a college campus. Parking permits are $$$. What are your thoughts?
Our son is thinking about going there, and won’t have a car. I’m sure one would come in handy if they want to go to Memphis on a weekend, but that’s what friends are for.
Do they need a car to get around town or is there local transportation to get them off campus and back?
From what I have seen, there is a shuttle around town (OUT or something like that).
To an urban kid like my son, who’s used to walking a mile or two to get somewhere, it doesn’t look like that far from campus to town. Looking at the Google Maps street view it appears there are sidewalks all the way there.
I think going to the Square is easy enough. It’s going out to places on Jackson Avenue or toward Kroger when one would want a vehicle or shuttle. H is going back and forth on letting her have a car. When I was there years ago, folks got around with the help of friends.
Ole Miss is intentionally making parking more scarce and expensive in order to raise money off of the students. But I can’t imagine sending a kid to Ole Miss without a car. What are they supposed to do when they go on a date, call a limo?
I tried riding the OUT bus with my kids, because I wanted to encourage them to use it to get around (they refused). It took three to four times longer to make a trip to Wal-Mart using the OUT bus than it would have taken just driving. (With that said, the OUT bus seems to be a great choice for students living in some of the Taylor Road and Molly Barr apartment complexes to get to campus, since parking is such a hassle).
It’s your choice to make. Most of the time the car will be parked at the dorm, but it sure is handy to get back and forth from home or to the airport. It’s better to have a car and not need it than to need a car and not have it.
