What exactly is a 4.0 GPA?

I know, stupid question. But according to collegeboard a cumulative average above a 93 average is a 4.0 GPA. Is this what most colleges consider a 4.0 during the admissions process?

Yes. 90-92 is A-; 3.7.

In my school, A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0

I don’t know if all colleges would re-calculate all applicants’ GPAs … i could be wrong.

I’ve always considered a 4.0 to be a 93+ average in every class taken in high school.

okay, so at ContractKiller, I have 3.54, yet my grade is a bit above a 90. This is on a 4.0 scale, how are colleges supposed to know that my school makes an A worth less? So what I have is a 3.7 or 3.8 in other schools, but my school switched it around.

So @ the OP, in my school a 4.0 would be for the kid who has above a 100 avg, or has a 100 exactly. Weird, I know.

If you hs reports numerically and your cum is 93, a college will likely think of it as a low A. If that’s what’s on your transcript, that’s what adcoms will see. In contrast, the kid who only gets letter grades- if he get all A’s, his school may call it a 4.0. Not all colleges recalculate, but the top schools will look at the specifics on your transcript. Also, many schools call 95+ an A (4.0) while some go 90+. Your hs will send a profile, describing what its standards are. That may not sound encouraging, but if it’s a competitive hs, the adcoms will know the value of a 93.

And, CB allows for the fact that not all schools grade on the same scale.

I haven’t seen my transcript yet but I’m pretty sure it says my GPA is around a 94.5. So I’m wondering if colleges will see that as a 4.0 even though I have had two or three high 80s in my high school career. Then again I should have taken more honors courses so I doubt it will really matter :(

See, I most of my friends at my high school don’t know this and I only found out about it this year that for some schools only 93+ is a 4.0. Our school considers everthing above 90+4.0, 80+ 3.0…etc. My school is also only the 7 point GPA system where 7= A in AP class, 6= B etc and Non-core classes aren’t counted towards GPA. My school’s so wierd o.O

It seems kind of unfair to a lot of people in our school if 90-93 is a 3.7 because of the ignorance. But then again our school is really competitive

OP, each class is evaluated against the 93 average. A couple of 80s are Bs. Those Bs are then used as separate grades. [Calculate Your GPA](http://www.back2college.com/gpa.htm)
