What exactly is "GPA in major"?

Hello,

Here I see people referring to their GPA's as overall GPA and GPA in major.. Please help me understand this. I'm in an undergrad program, and currently i'm in fourth year. I'm in civil engineering, but in first year it was called "general engineering courses." And at the beginning of second year, we specialized in different engineering disciplines and that's when I actually started to take civil engineering classes (this is how they do it in my school). So, does it mean that my GPA in my major is the average of 2nd, 3rd and 4th year?

In first year I took many irrelevant engineering courses and my school also has this thing called engineering graduation gpa, which excludes first year (this shows up in our official transcript when we graduate). So is this what grad programs will be looking at?

Thanks a lot in advance for any ideas/responses!

The main difference between the two is that major GPA doesn’t take into account General Education credits and electives while overall GPA does.

Hope this helps

What’s general education credits? In this case, would my first year be count as general education credits??

Ask your Uni advisor. The policies differ from school to school. Some of my GE credits are also credits for my major, while others may need something else.

Generally, your first to years are spent tackling GE credits approximately 21 to 30 credits and the remaining credits are major focused but this differ from school to school. Like XaviFM stated, its best to seek this information from your advisor.
