What gives with housing?

Wait, are the lounges air conditioned? And I heard the lounges used to be actual dorms, but they took the doors off of them and took out all the furniture to make them into lounges. But are those lounges air conditioned? And do they put the doors back for privacy on for the semester or however long they keep you in the lounges?

do you eve have to pay for sleeping in the lounges?

from the u of i site:
Q: What is Temporary Housing?

A: Floor lounges in the Residence Halls are converted to temporary student rooms and are set up to accommodate 3-5 students. These lounges were student rooms at one time and are easily converted back to a room. Students assigned to temporary housing receive a 50% reduced room rate while they are living in a floor lounge. These lounge/temp rooms are equipped with the same furnishings provided in regular student rooms and have locks on the entry door.

We provide one of the following to each student in the lounge: Bed, Desk, Chair, and Closet.

We provide one of the following in each temporary room: Internet connection and Phone jack.

Our first priority is to find permanent housing assignments for students initially placed in temporary housing. Census is taken on the first day of classes (Wednesday, August 23, 2006). Students who have not checked in to their residence hall assignment by the first day of classes will have their contract canceled. Students in temporary housing will then be assigned to these openings in permanent spaces. We will assign students out of temporary housing based on the date their contract was received.

To answer a couple of questions on this page
1. Allen is not the same as LAR (all girls). If you plan to live in Allen, I hope you chose to live there. If you are not sure what Allen is, I recommend you ask to be transferred out.

You can email the housing office requesting them to transfer you to another residence hall. Initially, I was put in PAR but my request to be transferred was granted. I ended up in Taft

Taft is a great dorm. It is the spot of the infamous Tafterhours where people party in and around the dorm til the wee hours of the morning. However, I swear the 4th floor is the hottest place on campus when it is warm.

If money is no option, live in IT (Illini Tower). Although it is the most expensive place to live on campus, it is worth it. Plus, you will meet more cute Jewish girls than you can handle (or dorky Jewish boys if that is your thing). Plus, you are right across the street from my fraternity and less importantly, three blocks from the quad.

FAR (and PAR) lives up to its name. It is very far from everything. If you live there, you will become good friends with the 22 and other buses.

Temporary housing is not living in the lounge per se. It really only means that your floor won't have a study lounge because you are living in it.

ISR sucks - you don't want to live there.

Most places do not have air conditioning. Deal with it.

hope this helps

smurphy--your comment about Allen Hall seems negative. Tell me your take on it. Unit One/Allen Hall is one of the main attractions at U of I to my HS sr dtr--she really prefers an LAC, but if she picks U ILL (since we have prepaid the tuition!) she definitely wants that program/dorm. She is "artistic" and definitely her own person and that plus the in-house classes attract her to Allen/UO. We're going over for a summer visit program in a couple of weeks to get a better feel for the place, which we have visited a few times. Two yrs ago she attended a tennis camp there. thanks for your input.

She sounds perfect for Allen Hall. She knows what it is and chose to live there. Allen tends to be the top choice for artistic types. Those who chose it, love it. Those who don't, want out. Another advantage of Allen Hall is that its right across the street from CRCE, the newly renovated gym complete with track, weight room, and restort-style pool.

My advice was for people who were randomly placed in Allen. 4 guys pledged my fraternity from Allen Hall last year, and they all chose to live in the house second semester rather than spend another semester in Allen Hall. On the other hand, I pledged the fraternity two years ago in the Fall and chose to remain in Taft for Spring semester.

FAR is pretty far lol, but walking distance maybe like 8-10 mins. to several buildings/classes and plus they got air conditioning lol.

I'll just put this out here and be straightforward when I say I believe what smurphy was trying to say was that Allen Hall simply has a more liberal background than say the six pack with its residents. i.e. quite a few people there might be homosexual. heck they do have some kind of LGBT group there. obviously some people are uncomftorable with gay people so he was just trying to warn others that if you are than you probably should not have applied to Allen Hall.

i have a friend there who loves it and she's straight... i dunno basically the impression that ive gotten is that it's a lot of music majors and band geeks who have a lot of fun. but like smurphy said if you randomly get placed in allen hall it might be a bit of a surprise.

oh no. I didn't say everyone. I just meant that there is a noticeable amount and it's a lot more open than say the six pack.

bookmom,

Allen Hall/Unit One was a real draw for my daughter. She's an Architecture major, but chose it for the opportunity to take some of the gen ed classes in much smaller groups right in the dorm rather than with a cast of hundreds. It's a good location and she has really enjoyed it. She and her roommate chose to stay there sophomore year also. There are all different types of kids who choose Allen. Some of the guests-in-residence have been a bit funky and some have been terrific. It's college - lots of new types of people, from all over and lots of new ideas.

momoftwins--just read yr reply tonight. Allen sounds more and more like a good fit for my dre--we both are impressed by the smaller classes offered there. Dtr is weighing UI against LACs, but UI is looking better and better to her. Allen may be what tips the scale. She will be submitting app in Sept and I understand we need to apply to Unit One/Allen at the same time to help ensure acceptance in UA/AH. Thanks for your input.

LAR is right next to Allen. LAR & Allen sort of share the same building. They also share the same dining hall. However, Allen is coed and LAR is only girls.

snort

Allen Hall is colloquially known as the dorm for all the hipster-artiste pot smokers.

But hey, my friends have never had a problem living there and not smoking.

smurphy, why does isr suck? im gonna be a freshman at u of i this fall and when i visisted it this summer it seemed like a really decent building for a dorm.

The thing about ISR is that, while it's a nice building, the majority of people it houses are engineering majors and similar. As such, they tend to be super focused on their studies, the doors are all usually closed, no one's up for hanging out that much. There's not a lot of dorm or floor activity.

ISR is a good dorm. My brother lived there his first two yrs and enjoyed it(he's not even an engineering major). I guess it all depends on personal perspective.
