Just heard a student found dead in their dormroom. Does anyone know?

Was that reported on the news?
I see that a professor at the University of Arizona confessed late last week that 50 years ago he killed his roommate in Swarthmore after being bullied, but I don't see anything about a recent student death.

This was the only recent thing I could find:http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?BRD=1675&dept_id=18171&newsid=13330824&PAG=461&rfi=9

Here's the story Emerald was talking about (fascinating story that):
http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/1119professordisclosure-ON.html

Sounds like that may be the one you heard BHG.

Backhand:

Since you are in Philadelphia and most of the Swarthmore parents here are NOT, I sure wish that you would add a little more detail about where you "heard" this?

I'm sure that you can appreciate how the paucity of details in your post could be a little unsettling to parents of kids at the school, especially since there is nothing on the wire services or the Phila TV station websites.

Gosh Carolyn, thanks. I just heard on the news 10 mins. ago a Swarthmore student found dead in the dorm but there were no details. Very vague. Sometimes reports like this on a weekend end up being false. The neighborhood is beautiful and safe. But Philly is rough.Guess it is as safe as any other big city but there have been so many sad things, I know to never go to Philly at night. And criminal types who do evil deeds - all colleges need to tighten security, protect our bright minds.

I heard it on FOX.

I'm sorry if I caused trouble. It was on channel 29, FOX. Just thought someone knew more.

Backhand: Could you please write more than one sentence. Are you talking about local Fox affiliate news in Philadelphia? Fox News Channel?

bhg - please be sensitive. If there is anything more worth saying, or you can even provide a link to the station, Swat parents would want to know (now that it is out - otherwise they'd want it tomorrow.) We are all very sensitive about situations that affect our kids, wherever they occur.

Go the extra mile.

I just went to fox 29 news (Phila ) and there is nothing there about this blurb that the broadcastcaster gave and I heard. I will try to pull this thread. There have been cases in the past where local news reports especially on the weekend are wrong. What exactly they said was a Swat student was found dead in theri room and officials are investigating and there is no comment from the university. If none of you have heard anything I think it could be wrong. This station has done this before. I will investigate this further and let you know I will pull htis thread. If you have not heard anything from you kids then nothing is wrong.

It's quite possible they got a story mixed up with another story. This has happened before. Ch29 news is not 100% reliable. I'll get this thread pulled. Nothing elsewhere so far. you can check WPVI 6 News, KYW 10 News, I'm not seeing anything so far.

OK. It appears that Fox29 had the story right.

From what I found on a Swat student message board, the Dean notified students in a campus-wide e-mail sometime early yesterday afternoon that a student was found dead in the dorm room. I have seen the name, but I don't think it's my place to post it.

The e-mail to the students yesterday afternoon did not provide any details or any cause of death. I've not seen any speculation, nor would I care to offer any. I would only offer condolences to the family.

Yes, this is a terrible thing. I guess my concern was that a crime had occurred.Natural events do happen everywhere all the time and they are usually not broadcast in such a manner on a news program. I was more concerned a crime had been committed or drinking was involved.
Learned my lesson with this one! I won't be breaking any more stories here!

This incident appears unrelated to any of the recent violenct crimes on Swat's campus. Anyone familiar with the recent concerns on campus might have made a quick connection. But, agian, this seems unrealetd. It's very sad.

The Swarthmore community was saddened to learn Sunday morning of the death of *************** '05. ******* passed away in his room in Wharton Central sometime Friday night or Saturday morning and was found by friends, according to a reserved-students e-mail sent to students early Sunday by Dean Bob Gross.

As of Sunday evening, no cause of death has been released by the College or authorities. ...According to Gross' email, ******* was a Physics major from Illinois and is survived by both parents and a sister.

The Daily Gazette will provide more details, including information on any memorial services, as they become available.

At this point the official cause of death is undetermined. It was initially reported as an apparent suicide, but in the absence of a note the medical examiner wants to wait until toxicology tests are completed in several weeks, Dean of the College Bob Gross said in an e-mail to The Phoenix.

There are no signs of a struggle or of foul play, he said.

It's a sad fact that there are suicides and deaths on campuses all the time. A college/university is just a microcosm of the general population -- students have chronic medical conditions, students get depressed, students are the victims of accidents.

Swarthmore parents received an e-mail, and follow-up hard copy letter, from Dean Gross about the death and resources on campus to help students cope, including special meetings of the RA's and faculty in the departments with the Director of Psych Services outlining appropriate responses and dealing with queries. The Dean said that the college would try to respect the family's right to privacy regarding cause of death, etc.

"The Phoenix" article today is the first that has made any reference to a preliminary cause of death, although I think most of the Swarthmore community is probably smart enough to have figured it out.
