the machine uses the conductivity in the graphite to detect mark/no mark.
the lower the number, the softer the "lead", and so it's easy to transfer a lot of graphite to the answer sheet.
a 2.5 pencil is probably still soft enough to have transfered a conductible amount of graphite.
if you use a mechanical pencil, an HB hardness is roughly the same as a #2. B, 2B, 3B, etc are softer. F, H, 2H, 3H, etc are harder.
there is no ISO standard definition of what constitutes a #2 or HB.

Don't worry man...all these people are messing with you.

I used Faber Castle HB 2.5 in my October SAT...and I used the same pencil in November

I got a 1990 in Oct....meaning that the machine DOES read the marks. If it can read one, it can read all...So relax.

Would thikn #e is a more likely possibility.

Plus when you take the pencil ln...

I used a 2.5, it is fine.

Unless you mark very lightly, it will be fine. They require #2 because some people don't press hard, and would use pencils with very hard lead, leaving very little mark for the machine to read. So, if you didn't mark extremely lightly, you are fine.

I know it's really difficult to get your hands on a #2 pencil...everywhere I go all I see are #2.5 pencils.

I don't think the # of the pencil matters. It's the darkness of the pencil that matters.

The number is the hardness of the lead, and harder lead leaves less of a mark.

actually, nobody really knows this, but if you don't use a #2 pencil, they'll detect the # of the pencil you use and divide your SAT score by that.

so you're gonna get ~1000, max.

How about a 1.9 pencil?

you can get the hand score after the test.

so don't worry -- just wait till the SAT comes back. if your score is significantly low, just get it hand scored.

"actually, nobody really knows this, but if you don't use a #2 pencil, they'll detect the # of the pencil you use and divide your SAT score by that."

Awesome, I used a #0.25 pencil.

"Awesome, I used a #0.25 pencil."

lol, so if you got a 2000, technically you got an 8000. =O Do I hear an...automatically accepted from Harvard?

Chuck Knorris used a pen on the SAT's...He got a 2400

I used a #ln(0) pencil. Beat that.

LOLOL. all of y'all, 800 for math I presume :D

don't you just love geektalk xD

Would you happen to be Singaporean, screwitlah? :p

LMAO

Harvard Rep: Grades are poor, essay is generic...let's see his SAT score...wow...Jim, take a look at this...this kid got an 8000 on his SAT...that's 5,600 more points than the highest I've ever seen...yeah, me too...This kid sounds like Harvard material to me...

To post a definite answer to my own question:

I finally got my scores back yesterday. I got a 2400 on my SAT

are you serious, if so, congrats!!

totally serious

thanks
