How to spell “taught.”

(I’ll post a serious answer in a minute.)

Yeah, my bad. Just kind of typed this up (English isn’t my first language)… Haha. I’ma edit that, thank you for pointing that out! lol

I’m a current junior.
I like high school, mostly because I like my classes (my social life is nonexistent). I also like the structure and the chance to be around people my own age.
I guess I’m happy with what I’ve accomplished in high school, though it isn’t much. I’m happy with my test scores and my grades and what I’ve learned. There are things I would change, but it’s a little late now for me to sit around being unhappy.

Stuff high school has taught me:

 1. You shouldn’t worry too much about the real-world applications of what you learn in high school. Learning is valuable for its own sake. High school and college are probably the only years of your life when you’ll be able to focus solely on learning more about the world and your place in it without having to worry too much about paying bills or working at a job. (Real life sucks a lot of the time and shouldn’t be shoved into everything more than it already has been.)
 2. High school is a lot like middle school except with harder assignments. I know a lot of people disagree but I don’t really understand why. You go to school, go to class, talk to people, go home.
3. High school in real life is nothing like high school in any movie I’ve ever seen. People are more down-to-earth and less stereotyped, and there aren’t really discrete cliques with labels.
4. You shouldn’t judge people without first hearing them talk in a class discussion. I really love class discussions because they allow you to see people’s philosophical sides, and I’ve been surprised a lot of times by the intelligence of people I previously thought were dimwitted/boring.
 5. It’s actually possible to get a B in gym.
 6. No one really cares all that much what you look like or what you wear.
 7. How to write. I’m not a great writer, but I’m a lot better than I was in eighth grade.

I’d change my extracurriculars and get involved in more stuff.

I would redo my years in high school. Not really because I’d want to change anything, but because it would add four years to my lifespan.

My favorite class was AP English Literature and my least favorite class was gym.

I don’t manage my time well at all. I once wrote a 20-page paper in one day because I didn’t start earlier. I’ve missed a lot of opportunities because of procrastinating. I get my homework done, but it’s mostly in the morning before school.

Favorite thing about high school = the classes.
Least favorite thing = getting up early.

Social = 1.
Like I said, I don’t have a social life. I’m not sure whether I’m happy with this or not.
Academic = 9.

I’m only a freshman so keep that in mind as you read my answers.

I dislike high school. Or at least my high school life. Most people are unappealing, my parents are strict, and I have way too much busywork that I have to do if I want to get out of this environment.

I can’t be happy about things I haven’t accomplished yet.

The biggest thing I’ve learned this year is that everyone has their own problems and nobody knows what they’re doing. To elaborate, this year I realized everyone is a living, breathing person with their own thoughts and feelings. When I was younger I thought that I was in a simulation or something and that I was the only one who had thoughts and a mind of their own. Everyone else was just another character in the simulation. But this year really opened my eyes to the fact that every single person surrounding you has their own thoughts and their own angsty teen problems.

I would prefer not to put myself through the horror of repeating all four years of high school.

My favorite thing about high school is that I’m able to see my friends everyday. Probably wont be a regular occurrence in college.

I’d answer the others, but I haven’t experienced enough of high school to answer them fully.

I really liked your answer halcyonheather!!! Very similar to what I’m going through.

Swinter, I know EXACTLY what you’re talking about! I’m currently a high school sophomore. I felt the same way about people in freshman year. I absolutely hated high school, and sadly, my grades showed it. lol. Don’t worry, there’s a reason why people say freshman year is the worst year. I honestly hope that this year was the worst year of your life, much like it was for me, because that way it will only get better!! Trust me though, sophomore year is WAY better! And that whole stimulation thing, everyone has taught that at some point of their life. Hahahaha.

Hey, a senior here!

High school’s great just because you can start taking some classes in subjects you probably never learned ANYTHING about in middle school. For example, I took classes in Italian, Music Theory, Computer Programming, Jazz Improvisation, and Economics in high school… none of which were offered by my middle school. It opens a lot of doors, although there’s still a lot not touched on in high school that you can major in when you go to college (i.e. Philosophy).

As far as the social life, it is what you make of it. If you don’t wanna drink or smoke, no one really cares, so you can do that. If you wanna hang out with friends and play Mario Party for hours on end, trust me, there’s a group of people for that. The friends come on their own, ASSUMING you actually do stuff. I met my closest friends in my two most important activities: my youth group and my school band. Seriously, extracurriculars are invaluable, not only for college apps, but just to meet people in high school. I went from only having one real friend in the middle of freshman year to having a large circle friends just one year later. This all said, I met my girlfriend through friends I mainly talked to on Xbox though, so make of that what you will. =P

One thing I will say is to not be afraid of honors/AP classes. I was kind of a slacker my freshman year, and my lack of honors that year kind of scared me from taking a few honors classes the following years. They’ll be challenging, but not as impossible as you think. Besides, your non-honors might not be much better… I just spent 4 hours doing work on non-honors English stuff and now it’s 2:00 AM. No matter what you’re going to have to work.

Oh, and do math/science contests if you’re into that. STEM colleges like that.

Favorite class: AP Physics B and C
Surprisingly Awesome Class: AP Economics
Least Favorite Class: Sophomore year English
Surprisingly Awful Class: Web Design

Social Experience: 7/10 (Freshman year sucked, but it got progressively better)
Academic Experience: 9/10 (Difficult, but far from impossible. Running a 4.0 and should keep it barring a catastrophe.)

Are you happy about what you accomplished in high school?
I am! I think I’ve developed really well, I have been doing all the things I wanted, but I wish there were more clubs in my school. No one seems to be interested, so there aren’t many.

What was the biggest thing that you’ve learned about yourself/life in high school?
It kinda showed me that I love design and maths!

What has high school taught you?
So far, is that challenging yourself is tough, but rewarding at the end of the day.

Did you like high school? Why or why not?
High school was a totally new experience for me, especially because my first year in high school coincided with my first year in the US. I loved how everything was different, so yeah I liked high school and I met a couple friends from different backgrounds.
Are you happy about what you accomplished in high school?
I wish I could have done more EC’s, but overall I’m happy with my academic accomplishments and how I rose to the top despite being an ESL student during my first two years.
What was the biggest thing that you’ve learned about yourself/life in high school?
What has high school taught you?
High school has taught me that I can do just about anything if I work hard and never give up.
I learned to accept the differences in people and appreciate diversity, which scared me at first since I come from a very homogeneous country.
If you could change one thing, what would it be? Why?
I wish I started to play sports since my freshman year and took harder classes from the beginning.
If you could redo all your years in high school, would you?
Sometimes, I miss my freshman or sophomore years and the people who have graduated already, but for now, no I wouldn’t redo high school. My journey is not over yet, and I am excited for my senior year.
What was your favorite class?
AP chemistry was my favorite class because of the teacher who taught it and the people I worked with on labs. It was a great experience.
Least favorite class?
English is my second (third actually) language, so I struggled with English class at first after leaving ESL, but I’m okay with it now. I just don’t like it…
How did you manage your time in high school?
I stay up at night a lot due to my schedule overload of difficult classes.
What was your favorite thing about high school?
Meeting friends from different backgrounds.
Least favorite?
Having to stay up and do a lot of work.

I’m a sophomore.

Q: Did you like high school? Why or why not?
A: Yeah, I’ve actually really enjoyed high school because I enjoy all of my classes and I like learning. Sometimes the workload gets tough and frustrating, like having six large assignments and an AP exam occurring within a 10 day period (May 10-20), but overall, I’m happy.

Q: Are you happy about what you accomplished in high school?
A: Not really, I feel I haven’t been involved enough in school, my social life–while improved–is still pretty much non-existent, and my grades aren’t as high as they should be because I’ve slacked off at times. I definitely could have done better.

Q: What has high school taught you?
A: That you can’t procrastinate on large assignments until the 11th hour and still expect to do well on them.

Q: If you could change one thing, what would it be? Why?
A: My work ethic, definitely. I need to stop slacking and procrastinating on assignments.

Q: If you could redo all your years in high school, would you?
A: Eh, not sure. I’d love to take some of my favorite classes again, like freshmen health class (the wildest, most insane class I’ve ever been in), for example, but I wouldn’t want to do all the work.

Q: What was your favorite class?
A: 9th grade health, with 10th grade AP Euro, PE, and 9th grade physics (we had a crazy teacher, and we ended up playing ping pong during class most of the time) being close behind.

Q: Least favorite class?
A: Spanish II, freshman year. The teacher didn’t teach at all, and did nothing but sit at her computer, so it was the most boring class ever. Luckily, we got her fired during Thanksgiving break, so things improved afterwards.

Q: How did you manage your time in high school?
A: I’m the worst time manager ever.

Q: What was your favorite thing about high school?
A: My teachers.

Q: Least favorite?
A: The rude, disrespectful kids that inhabit my school.

Q: Rate your high school experience (socially) from 1-10.
A: 2/10. I’ve made strides to become less introverted, but I’m still pretty anti-social.

Q: Rate your high school experience (academically) from 1-10.
A: 8/10

Q: Did you like high school? Why or why not?
A: I liked part of it. The other half I wish to never have gone through in the first place, but the other parts of it were pretty fun. Would have changed alot my first year though. That makes the foundation!

Q: Are you happy about what you accomplished in high school?
A: I just finished my soph year of college, but no. I really underpreformed there, I went to a very strenous private high school. Would have done much better at public school. So far Ive done great at college so i guess it was a blessing in disguise.

Q: What was the biggest thing that you’ve learned about yourself/life in high school?
A: That you need to respect yourself for who you are and what you do. People may try to tear you down but adversity introduces a person to themself. Some people crumble when faced with it, the winners stand tall in the face of it. I also learned that you have to make yourself social, dont worry about fitting in, stand out. Just be happy outgoing and friendly and you will do fine. It worked in college, so Id say do that!

Q: What has high school taught you?
A: That no matter how popular you are when it comes to the real world those that will be able to skate by because of who they are will have a real wake up call. You need to be an independent person. Case in point, our starting QB my sophomore year who I backed up on JV was probably the most popular high schooler Ive ever seen. Partied with people in every grade, jerked around in class. Real funny guy, just a terrible student/got in trouble often. Fast forward two years, hes back at my high school cutting grass because he got in trouble for drugs/grades at college. Hopefully this wakes him up. I really admired him and even wanted to be like him as a kid

Q: If you could change one thing, what would it be? Why?
A: Dont worry about what other people think. Their opinion wont matter in 2 years anyway

Q: If you could redo all your years in high school, would you?
A: No, no, and absolutely not. I would redo my soph/jr years but the other ones no no and no

Q: What was your favorite class?
A: English

Q: Least favorite class?
A: Math

Q: How did you manage your time in high school?
A: Decently I guess…

Q: What was your favorite thing about high school?
A: The fact that teachers were willing to work with you to understand material and offered you multiple chances to correct errors. There is no safety net in college.

Q: Least favorite?
A: Double standards set by students/teachers/administration.

Q: Rate your high school experience (socially) from 1-10.
A: 1 Freshman year 8 sophomore year 8 junior year 4 senior year. So 5/10

Q: Rate your high school experience (academically) from 1-10.
A:
1 Freshman year, 4 sophomore year. 5 junior year, 7 senior year

Graduating senior!

Q: Did you like high school? Why or why not?
A: Absolutely not. It was boring, academically and socially. I tried to take every AP/honors class I could possibly fit into my schedule, not because I liked all the subjects but because I wanted to be challenged. And though it was a lot of work, none of them were conceptually or actually hard, per se. This situation was worsened by my peers, who (mostly) were not motivated, and were content to learn only in the proscribed limits. They seemed to fear learning.

I had a decent social life throughout much of high school. I’ve let that drift away now because I’ve lost interest. I’ve gotten bored of the stale conversations and the repetitive activities, and so, I just distanced myself from most people. I now have a close group of friends who I stick with, and life is much easier. That’s actually one of the reasons I’m going across the country for college (NY to Berkeley): I want to see something new and meet new people, and leave my legacy in high school far away in the past.

Q: Are you happy about what you accomplished in high school?
A: Nope. I could have done much more; I only wish that I did it instead of sitting here on this website expressing my regrets. I honestly should have done a lot more extracurricularly: not doing a bunch of BS clubs, but choosing something I enjoy, and sticking with it. That is something I will do in college.

Q: What was the biggest thing that you’ve learned about yourself/life in high school?
A: I am very different from other people in what I value, strive for, and expect from myself.

Q: What has high school taught you?

-Don’t place too much hope in anyone; they’ll eventually let you down.
-Don’t become obsessed with material markers of achievement, and trick yourself into believing that a high SAT score or a good GPA means anything.
-Don’t derive your happiness form other people.

Q: If you could change one thing, what would it be? Why?
A: I wish I had taken more of an initiative in high school, so I could have done something amazing. I wish I had done more.

Q: If you could redo all your years in high school, would you?
A: Nope. I’d rather not go through 4 years of stupidity again.

Q: What was your favorite class?
A: AP Literature, AP Physics C, AP Calculus (more than one, sorry).

Q: Least favorite class?
A: AP Government, every math/english class before Calc/Lit.

Q: How did you manage your time in high school?
A: I procrastinated, but I managed to get everything done.

Q: What was your favorite thing about high school?
A: That because most others were so complacent and unmotivated, I could seem intelligent.

Q: Least favorite?
A: My peers.

Q: Rate your high school experience (socially) from 1-10.
A: 5

Q: Rate your high school experience (academically) from 1-10.
A: If academically you mean my grades, then a 9.

Hey, a survey!

I was homeschooled and my family’s and my philosophy is that the distinction between school and life is arbitrary; there are classes, curricula, and grades, but beyond that, “school” is not a very descriptive term. So by “high school”, I really mean the four years of my life before becoming an adult. (Though arguably I’m still a kid. =p)

Overall, I liked high school; I’ve never been not somewhat happy with any given significant part of my life. I didn’t like classes *per se/i and I would generally prefer to do anything other than sit through an online lecture or do homework. But classes were such a small part of learning.

I’m not happy about what I have (rather, haven’t) accomplished up to now, let alone in high school. I’m an epic slacker. I’d say that’s the biggest thing I learned about myself in high school. Even when you think your situation is temporary, you’re probably forming habits that will affect you later for better or worse.

But I wouldn’t go through high school again or even change a single part of my past – that would change who I am. I’m content with who I am. What it couldn’t have hurt to learn earlier, though, was that my interest in becoming a biologist was transient and that I was really a computer nerd and destined to be a software developer and computer scientist ever since I started tinkering with computers as a wee lad.

Favorite class was [Advanced Composition](http://vbulletin.pottersschool.org/content.php?503-Advanced-Composition), which was like AP English Language and Composition but with less reading and more writing. I love writing well thought-out argumentative essays, which I learned in that class along with becoming so much better at it. It was also taught by the best teacher I had in high school.

Least favorite class was Latin III. It met at 8:00 am in the teacher’s time zone, i.e. 5:00 am in my time zone. For reference, I’m so not-a-morning-person that in times after that year, I would have stayed up late rather than getting up early for that class.

How did you manage your time in high school? HA. HAHA. HAAAAAAHAHAHAHA.

My favorite thing about high school was speech and debate. So many great friends and good memories made through that.

My least favorite thing must have been becoming more and more engrossed in the MMORPG I was playing and then having no choice but to quit it entirely. (In retrospect, it was necessary, and the game isn’t even as good as I’d made it out to be.)

I may post a longer answer later, but one thing I’ve learned in high school: no one cares.
