What I Did For My Summer Vacation (Share Your Tales)

It might be interesting to compile the things that students have done during this summer. Make it anecdotal with a selected experience you want to share. Or just provide your complete itinerary.

What sorts of things do boarding school students do with their summers? Do they tend to stay close to home after being away the rest of the year? Or are they more likely to take flight? Do they focus on academics or athletics? Do they work odd jobs or work on their tans?

And...for admissions purposes...how do your summers now compare to your summer before you applied to BS? Can an admissions counselor look at your last summer and learn something about you? Is there a correlation between pre-BS summer and your BS summers?

Basically, just share with us how you spent (are spending) this summer. Thanks!

Well, actually, no, I didn't do anything last summer to prepare for boarding school. The only thing that I put down that could have counted was Duke TIP, which is purely for pleasure, though I did that second session (July instead) this year.

Before Duke TIP, June was quite boring. I went to NYC (only fun part), hung out at my grandparents' place in NC, and went home for two weeks. August picked up quickly, with me going to NYC after staying up all night the last day at Duke. Well, not all night (my friend and I slept from 4:30 - 6:30, and I fell asleep for another 2 hours). I'm a wimp, I know. :) I can only stay up for work reasons.

Then I went to Newport, RI. This was the BEST part. The first day there, I went to my friend's lawyer's house (like a mansion) and we jumped off a 20 foot cliff there. My friend, Serena, though, was too scared to. AND her mom got mad at me later, but I was glad I'd done it. "Life isn't about the breaths you take, but the moments that take your breath away", right? :) That was my fave part.

We basically just hung out for the rest of the week, sometimes going to the beach, etc. but the first day was the best. Then we left on Monday to come here to the Hamptons, so I could see my mother's boyfriend's daughter again, who's arriving tomorrow and sadly leaving on Sunday when I leave also. Then I'm going back to Newport for two weeks with my dad for our yearly vacation, and also a little cape in Massachusetts.

And no, I actually DONT want to spend a lot of time at home. I'm kind of "gettin ready" for boarding school by not sticking around at home all summer. I don't think it would really make a difference.

From June 14-25, I just hung out at my house and my friends' houses and swam. It was fun, but kind of boring sometimes. Then from June 26 - August 1 I went to Andover Summer Session and had a blast. It seems like I haven't been there for months but it's only been a week. Now I'm in Canada at my dad's house until the 27th and I've been here since the 1st. Then from the 27th-3rd, I'll just be hanging out with people and swimming. I might visit some boarding schools in a week or two, but I'm not completely sure. I want to see St. Paul's, and I've already had my interview for Andover and I might visit Hotchkiss and Deerfield. I don't know what other schools to see. lol

Jonathan, go see Choate! :) You don't want me to send the famous PM to you, do you??

Haha.. you can try to convince me. :)

Yeah, deff. visit sps this fall
you might see me there! lol
=)

In June my family and I went to Hong Kong for pleasure. The day after we came back I went to a tennis academy for a month. Improved A LOT in tennis and made a lot of friends, it was awesome. Now I am at Beijing Language and Culture University studying chinese for a month. Leaving for the U.S. on August 23rd to NYC for a week of shopping and then off to Choate:)

I am attending a conference call ACCESS in my country. I am going to attend classes of professors from Stanford. Beside that, there are many extra curricular activities like i will be a tour guide for professors and teaching assistants or i will have chance to play soccer in the National stadium

Hey Helen, are you doing tennis in the spring?

Olivia: Yep im gonna play tennis in the Spring..definitely.
What about you? Oh, and what happened to your facebook?

Oh, Helen, they disabled my FB account till I get my Choate email cause they realized I wasn't in a network!

@ itshelenmelon: Were you in the Netherlands for that tennis academy?

D'yer: Nope, this was just a local academy in china ... though it was pretty good too.

Loads of traveling, but that's not got anything to do with boarding school. Just my family.
I swear, I've spent more time this summer at aeroports, and on planes, buses, trains, shuttles, cabs, cars, ferries, and the subway that I've spent in any one actual place.

For any students ultimately interested in going into the financial markets for a career, I would encourage you to use a little bit of what's left of your summer to pay attention to what is going on in the world. Historic (and not necessarily in a good way) events have happened, and continue to happen, this summer. There are parts of the financial markets which are undergoing permanent changes at their fundamental core. If you do study business in college or grad school I would not be surprised for there to be portions of classes or cases studies which are based upon the "summer of 2007".

There are a number of stories available that document the global domino effect on the markets. Some guy decides repaying his mortgage isn't a priority and my mutual funds go to hell in a handbasket.

This article, which refers to the impact of a butterfly's wing flapping in the rain forest, is a good example:

This Forbes article (AP wire feed) is also excellent:

A little heavy on the hysteria and light on the facts, but I have to say I think Kramer (GS alumni like myself) is 100% accurate.

i haven't been doing much this summer either. I did a bunch of soccer camps and started on a huge project. The summer doesn't really matter to a lot of schools.
