What if class rank includes non-academic classes?

I’m not sure if my school ranks or not, I haven’t asked the counsellor. We do acknowledge the top 3 GPAs of the year though. However, those GPAs also include classes that most universities will probably discard, such as Art, P.E., and other non-academic electives. So why should my school’s ranking have any bearing, unless those universities are also willing to accept those classes as legitimate ones? Basically, what I’m saying is that if all of us only took two classes, then somebody with a 100% in Art and 90% in Math would be ranked higher than someone with a 100% in Math and 88% in Art. Doesn’t seem fair, does it?

PS For “core” academic subjects such as Math, English, etc., does a language (e.g. French or Spanish) count in there as well?

No it's not fair, and schools rank differently (ex. using weighted GPAs rather than unweighted GPAs). But colleges aren't solely concerned with your ranking and if you have high grades with tough classes, they'll recognize that.
