What if I don't have a role model?

I need to say who my role model is for one of my apps. I honestly don't have a single role model, so would it be ok to put that? I mean, I try to reflect some of the things I see in society, but what I pick is pretty subjective on my part. I don't try to emulate just one specific person.

What should I do?

Write about it. Explain what and why, though.

You could even pick a couple, if you wanted, or just one quality in someone that you admire.

I know what you mean, it’s hard to come out and say you’re “two parts Shaq, one part Nelson Mandela, with a touch of my uncle Fred”, but if it’s true it’s true. They probably don’t even expect you to find one person that completely embodies who you want to be.

Also!

Andy is right, denying any role model in itself could make a cool potential response.

So the school is USC. Should I just say myself, or N/A? I’m just worried it would make me sound arrogant.

You obviously have some influences, regardless of whether they are specific people or not, that have some bearing on the person you would like to be when you grow up. Explain your situation in your essay.

I would, but its not an essay. One sentence at the most. :S

So you have no influences at all?

No, I probably do. I draw from what I see around me, and what I like and don’t like. I also draw from myself though, and what I like about myself, and what I don’t like about myself.

Well, what do you see around you? What do you like? What do you dislike?

I could write an entire novel on that. I’m limited to just one sentence though. Do you think its possible to include all of that in one?

As of right now, my response is:

“I don’t have a single role model; I draw from everything around me.”

I don’t think you shoudl say you don’t have any role models. That might make you seem a bit antisocial or unappreciative of others. And explaining that you have 5-6 role models and why.. will take too long and I think that’s just going to complicate the matter. Try to keep it simple: just think of all the people who you admire to some extent, and choose one of them. I was in the same situation as you (no single role model) so I just decided to choose a teacher I know well.

Btw, no I don’t like the response you have right now. I know it’s sincere, but to be honest, it sounds like you are trying to dodge the question. I suggest that you actually name somebody even if it’s a bit of a white lie.

then try writing about other stuff. they have 2 other prompts to choose from. Good luck :)

Okay, so you can write an entire novel on the subject. Instead of writing the novel, write the synopsis that would be on the back cover. Or write the Sparknotes.

I just put on my Stanford app. that I draw inspiration from myself.

ha ha.. this is along the lines of “If there was any one person in the world that you would go out to lunch with, it would be_______” I had to do this one, and I said someone who is “tall, dark, and handsome.” I hope they won’t hate/auto-reject me for making the reply a joke. I just couldn’t think of anyone in particular that was meaningful to me…

I agree that you should not say you have no role models–it makes you sound self-important. Perhaps you can think of somebody you admire, even if you don’t exactly strive to be like that person. Possibilities:

 1. A parent
 2. A favorite teacher
 3. A political leader
 4. A creative person

Make one up. That’s what I did…
