Well, here it is, i failed the writing exam. I was never good at writing ever since 10th grade, but it was still a surprise to me when i received my results today. After knowing many of friends, who passed the examination, i begin to wonder, What should i do next.

The letter told me to take a writing course called “Workload 057”, which is a perequisite course for 1 quarter in order for me(other students) to continue on with Regular university level english courses. My question is, will i be behind one quarter after i passed the WorKload 057? Or is that course like an extra course that i must take. I need some advice

thanks in advance

Jacker im in same boat as you..I thought the writing topic was really easy and I did use all my time to put in effort when I took the test but I somehow didnt pass. Like you, I have some friends aruond me that passed who are not really better writers than me.

I am also concerned like you that I might get behind in Davis, but from what I have been hearing, I heard you really don't get behind and get enough credits on time....but in the end im not so sure..someone answer our Questions, PLZ....lol

man, this is a bummer. Well, i found out that one of my friend who took Ap english also didn't pass the examination. meh, I KNEW I SHOULDN"T HAVE DRONE OFF THE INTERNET TOPIC and WROTE ABOUT WHAT WoW did TO MY FRIEND

yeah. TKang, i was wondering the same question too, will that put us in behind by 1 quarter

I am going to call UCD and ask and post it here if no one still does not answer our question....

though im not too worried b.c im biological sciences major so english isnt much of a priority for me...

p.s. to jacker

lol World of Warcraft..haha

i am not too worried about it too, for now my major is undecided, but i figure i will transfer to Mechanical Engineering in next two year. Besides my parents are really opting me to go transfer to UCLA.

You will not be behind a quarter. You will learn how the college system works, so don't ever feel as that workload classes will slow you down. If you failed, you will either be taking Workload 57 (College Writing) or a Linguistics class. You still get units for minimum progress, but it WON'T count for graduation (which is fine, most of you guys already have a butt load of AP units transferring over). After you pass Workload 57, you will take two more quarters of English at any time in your college life. You can opt to wait until your fourth year to do it -- any time you want! Just don't feel as you're going to be behind your peers. I passed the placement test but didn't take UWP(lower division English) until my second quarter. I have friends who still haven't taken UWP yet!

i didn't pass either. But I have to say that this year's topic SUCKS. I'd much prefer the SAT type of essay topic where literature, reading, technology, observation, and personal experience are all applicable somewhat.
The internet addiction disorder topic is crap, seriously.
Besides, UC overcharges those who plan on taking this exam. It is no better than collegeboard, the worst thing is that UC expects/plans "half of the students" to fail anyways.
It is a totally incomprehensive determination of a student's ability to write.

I do agree that they are overcharging it, but I didn't know they expected half of the students to fail. =O

wait, Minilemon, are you saying personal experience and observation are not applicable examples that can be used on the exam?

to Blueyoshi
they did explain on the letter on where they mentioned half of the students who took the exam failed...(sad ratio to me)

I remember when i had to take the Workload 057... i hate to say it but..that class is a BIG waste of time....the material taught in that class does not even help you in the long run.. it only helps you PASS THE TEST, and after you pass the test, you'll never write in that form or way again. WARNING: if you fail to pass the exam in Workload 057, you have to take it again. (u can take that class up to 3 times i believe). And plus, you don't get a teacher from UC Davis teaching you, it's a teacher from SAC State that is HAPPY to fail you because it's about a 5 unit class which is equivlant to about $750 bucks (1 unit = 150 bucks rounded). WASTE OF MONEY. WASTE OF TIME.

Just make sure you pass it the first time. Or you have to sit in those 5 hours a week classes AGAIN FOR ANOTHER QUARTER where you learn "THEIR WAY OF WRITING TO PASS THE EXAM!"

about 50% of the students in my class failed the exam and had to take it over.....
make sure you know... some professors are nicer than others, but some just want to make your life miserable...

** MY ADVICE is do your research on the professor before adding the class. MAKE SURE YOU GET ONE THAT HAS GOOD REVIEWS by searchin' professor rating websites.

** IF YOU FAIL THEIR CLASS, BUT YOU PASS THE WRITING EXAM. YOU STILL FAIL THE COURSE BECAUSE YOU NEED TO PASS THE CLASS WITH AT LEAST A "C"..

wait, i thought you just need to get a C to pass the requirement?

well, i really don't much of the professors at UCD and Sac statei thought the class is from Sac City College, i read that this professor name Karma Waltonen is pretty easy going. Can any upper-classman name me some good professors for this particular class?

It is Sac City not Sac State.

yeah, i thought the class/professor is from Sac City

i just received an email from the ESL coordinator that i was placed into Ling23, but my SAT scores(530) and ACT scores are definitely higher than the requirement for Workload 057. I've been trying to reach the ESL department but no avail from my effort. I am really worry about being place into Ling23 because it seems so weird for me to be place into an ESL class after 8 years of regular education in USA
