what if i started an ec in middle school

If I entered my high school in the 7th grade and started swim team and now am in the 11th grade (same swim team), when I write swim team on my college applications will I write 6 years (including senior year) or just 4 years.

I think you would just write 4 years because colleges might only want to see what you did in grades 9-12 since 9th grade is when most people enter high school.

I say 6 years because it both shows what you did during high school (gr.9-12) and your high level of involvement and commitment. It’s like if you started a charity or club in gr.7 and still manage it, you’ll put it in and say you started it in gr.7 instead of gr.9. There’s no harm in putting 6 years but it could be beneficial, so why not? College adcom are not gonna go “RAWR WE SAID ONLY 4 YEARS!!! AUTOMATIC REJECT!” You’re just not supposed to put down things that you only did before gr.9.

I believe most applications just had a box to check if you did it in 9th-12th grades. If they have a number of years, definitely put down 6. However, just know you may not have the opportunity on some applications. :)

It depends on the specific application. If the app asks for how many years you did it in high school, then you should say 4. If the app asks for how many years you’ve done it without giving a range of time, then you should say 6.
