What if we change majors; how do we register for classes then?

I might change my major....what should I do? Should I go to the academic advising center before my enrollment time?

you should stay indoors

no c'mon...

no one cares what major you are or what classes you're taking. just register for whatever classes you want. no one is breathing down your back, telling you what classes you have to register for anymore

yeah but classes change according to major

It doesn't matter. You don't even have to tell them your major until the end of your sophomore year (90 units). So you have until then to let them know. Just enroll in whatever classes and get it taken care of before then; don't worry about it, you have plenty of time.

But what if I decide that I prefer bio to chem for a pre-med major.....then what do I do?

as we have both assured you, no one cares. your first quarter, you're going to most likely take chem6a, math10 or 20a, some writing class and some GE whether or not you're a chem or bio major. though if you're chem, take 20 series math. that's about it. no one cares what your major is or what classes you take. they don't limit your choice in classes during registration. calm the heck down. i was in your position before (changed from chem to bio during welcome week) and i registered for whatever classes i needed, so trust me. if you need to change majors, just get a major change form (from the respective department you want to transfer into on campus, so just wait until you get there in the fall--honestly, no one cares what your major is, not even your future grad school cares if you changed your major 14 times because it won't even show up on your transcript). otherwise, there are NO problems with registration. it's very straightforward and if you screw up, you didn't deserve to get an acceptance from ucsd in the first place.

. . . major changes showed up on my enrollment verification. Are you sure they don't show up on the official transcripts?

they don't show up on tritonlink for me, i've never opened an official transcript to know. i only wrote that to tell iran.4 to shut up. :P

pre-med? oh god, please don't try to become a doctor. you will put lives at jeopardy. do it for mankind.

is there any way to change your major online or is the only way mailing in that form?

just wait to get on campus to change it, no hurry/worrying needed. i don't know how to change your major online but it was a very simple process in-person. get a major change form (available at all depts), fill it out and submit it to the dept you want to transfer into. 3 weeks later, voila, you're in that major. (note: does not work for impacted majors.)

Why is everyone trying to change their majors already... isn't it a little early??

there are the usual doubts about what we chose to do for the rest of our lives (supposedly, anyways) 9 months ago.

back to the main question, is it acceptable to switch into an impacted major?

^
i know someone who switched into an impacted major after appealing... comp sci. but i'm pretty sure you need department approval for that tho so they're going to look at your admissions stuff before they let u switch.

to IRAN, i think a major is important early on if you want to do something related to engineering.

Switching into an impacted major is extremely difficult, and in some cases impossible. I don't think its at all possible to switch into BioE and BioE:Biotech, but apparently CSE lets some continuing students switch in, though it is more difficult to do so than switching into a non-impacted major.

^ yeah it's some academic excellence program... if u do really well at ucsd you'll get a chance to apply for admission into CSE.
