does anyone know if i can still change my major once i enter ucsc? i got in for art but i rather do psych or bio.. can i change it before or after starting the school year and how can i do that?
thanks!

You haven’t actually declared a major yet. You have a ‘proposed major’ but until you put in all the paperwork (academic advising and department advising) you’re not locked into anything yet. Students declare once they reach 90 credits, usually at the end of sophomore year (although I had to declare at the end of freshman year because I had too many JC and AP credits). You’ll get an email from the registrar telling you to declare a major when you get close to the credit line.

There are some restricted classes that are open to majors only, but those are usually upper division classes (anything with a class number above 100) and you probably won’t be able to take any as a freshman anyway. All lower div science classes (except bio 20L when I was there) are open to anyone who wants to register.

If you want to do bio make sure you take chem 1A this fall. I think bio 20A has a chem 1a prereq so you won’t be able to take that until you pass chem, but 20C doesn’t (or didn’t).

If you want to do psych, check the major requirements and start on those in the fall.
