What if you don't like football?

Would a girl who doesn't like football and isn't into "school spirit" feel comfortable at USC? How dominant is the frat culture?

There are people at USC who don’t go to football games and do other things instead. However, these people are the minority as all the activities on game day center around the football game. It’s one of the things that makes USC really special, in my opinion. I think it would be a good idea just to go to one football game to give it a try. There are a lot of people who aren’t the biggest football fans but go to the games for the atmosphere. However, if you’re not into football, you can always find things to do since you’re in LA. School spirit is also really big at USC and in my opinion one of the greatest attributes to the school. I think it’s really great that there are a lot of students who love USC and are happy to be here. I don’t really understand why you wouldn’t want to have pride in your school. I would say the majority of students have school spirit/pride but it isn’t necessarily “ra-ra” in your face all the time. It’s more of a realization that they go to one of the best schools in the country and that they are proud to call it their own.

As far as frat culture (which is different from school spirit), their presence is noticeable but it doesn’t dominate USC. There are a lot of other clubs, orgs, events, etc. here at USC that if you don’t want to step on the Row, you don’t have to. While a lot of students go to Row on Thursdays/Fridays to party, there are a lot of other students who don’t. It depends on who you surround yourself with once you get here. If you surround yourself with people who aren’t into the Greek system, then you won’t have to worry.

Quoting for emphasis.

If you don’t like football, then don’t go to the games – but everyone should try and go to at least one! They’re really fun, even if you’re not huge into sports. It’s really a fun time to spend with your friends surrounded by tens of thousands of USC students and fans.

Something like 17% of students are in the “traditional” Greek system. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to deal with it because it really is a small minority. You’ll see people wearing their house shirts, especially during rush – but it’s not like you have to go to their parties. Actually, most of the non-Greek parties at USC are better than the Greek ones! (Less crazy)

Don’t worry, once you get here, you’ll learn to have school spirit and love football :D

One thing to mention too is that everyone, not just people in the greek system, goes to tailgates, football games, and related events. You definitely should go with your friends, just to soak in the atmosphere and have a good time. What I love about gamedays is seeing all the old alumni and fans coming to campus to have a good time. Plus parents, friends, etc. It’s a great atmosphere and you should definitely experience it, since it is one of the things that really makes USC special.

Is it possible to go to just one game to try it without purchasing the full student pass?

To sit in the student section? Not really; some people borrow friend’s IDs who aren’t going to the game that day, but you should look a little like the person.

If you want to go sit in the student section, it’s best to buy the pass. Individual game tickets will cost just about as much as the pass will and you’ll be sitting with alumni, fans, etc. and not with friends.

Chances are you won’t go to only one game; you don’t have to stay the whole time, either. I left games during the half several times when I had work to do, etc.

Son is a music major who played football in high school. When living in the dorms freshman year went with dorm floor friends and had fun. Bought season ticket last year and was living with music friends in a house maybe one or two of the housemates had tickets. Went one or two times with friends from dorm floor and didn’t go to the rest. Isn’t buying a ticket this year. He has always enjoyed playing sports more than watching and enjoys the USC games more for what other people have talked about as the social aspects and fun/party atmosphere. Loves USC but probably isn’t into the “spirit thing” so much as loves his program and the people in it. Also loves his dorm friends from freshman year, but doesn’t see them as much. He isn’t in a fraternity and has close friends who are and aren’t. USC is diverse enough that you can find people that are a great fit for you and probably some that aren’t necessarily ones that you would have predicted being your type going in.

My son’s situation is even worse. He may go to University of Florida, and he hates football, which is very unusual for a guy.

But I would say go to the games anyway. They are only once every two weeks. And then, even just a few months. Just hang out with everyone, and people watch. I am a football fan, and went to Michigan for graduate school, but going to the games was rather boring for me as well. You gotta go at least once, just to say you did it!!!

the games are boring and are even worse when you lose a lot. i usually leave the games early (as does a lot of people) but i go just for the school spirit/drinking

You may not be into it now, but you will once you get here. The atmosphere is amazing on game day.
