i'm in a similar boat with uchicago. actually, i applied two years ago and got the big R. fingers crossed!

I was rejected by both Maryland and Virginia Tech as a senior last year and now im applying again as a transfer.

I did the same. I think it depends on what college because some schools are just more transfer friendly...not necessarily the ones I applied to...so im sort of expecting rejection.

If you were rejected last year and apply this year, you can assume they will reject you UNLESS you have made excellent progress in the intervening year (or we're talking about some hypercompetitive school where admissions is, as they say "a crap shoot" -- maybe this is your year to get lucky in the draw).

It will be different if you applied as a senior in high school and was rejected and are now applying as a sophomore transfer than if you applied as a sophomore transfer and are now applying as a junior. In both cases, it is beneficial to show that you have changed in a positive way in the middle. In terms of the first, it's good to show that you're doing awesome in college, and wouldn't you just be doing /so much better/ in that program that this other school has. In terms of the second, it's good to show that your excellent work first year (the one quarter/semesters worth that you might have been able to show them) is only continuing, and wouldn't it be so much better if you could finish in their program? Etc.

A former rejection doesn't mean an always rejection. :D

Well i went to boarding school for my last two years of high school, out of a 50 graduating seniors, 20 applied to duke, where I want to go, and 9 or so got in. I think it was all a numbers game. Hey i got into dartmouth didn't I, and their acceptance rate is only 16% percent. I mean like I'd be fine still going here, but I just wanna see if I can get it. It was my number one choice last year...I've been there to visit so many times to see friends and i absolutely love it!

and people who are applying again...why are you doing it?
