Is someone who went to high school overseas for 2 years, then went back to California for the last 2 years considered a resident if his family has been paying taxes and owned a house in California the whole time?

From what I’ve heard, it’s basically anyone who’s HOME is california. So if your family has been paying taxes and owned a house, and you’re a dependent of your parents, you qualify. People who went to a California HS for 3+ years qualify, too. I think when you fill out the dependent verification form or something when you’re accepted, you need to explain why you’ve been out of country.

I have a similar question. My family moved to California last July, and I was wondering if I just made it into the time frame for in-state. If not, how difficult will it be to declare residency for my Sophomore year? My guidance counselor says that it’s almost impossible, but then again she’s not very reliable at all when it comes to specific college information.

Depends on if you are minor, and perhaps where you went to High School.

"Moves to or from California

A student who is a minor (under age 18 by the RDD) with a California resident parent and moves to California to begin residing with that parent prior to his or her 18th birthday, may be eligible for classification as a resident for tuition purposes.

A student who is a minor (under age 18 by the RDD) whose parents were California residents who have moved to another state, who remains in California and enrolls in a California post-secondary institution within one year of his or her parents’ departure, may be eligible for classification as a resident for tuition purposes."

Thanks! I did read through that and I was a minor at the time of the move, but I’m still not sure since my parents technically aren’t residents since they haven’t been established here for a year either (unless they’re already considered residents just by paying taxes?).
