What is a 'good' and 'bad' score in your opinion?

This is how I feel:

1500-1600 a bad score.
1600-1700 is an average score (technically it's above average, but for college bound students it should be average).
1700-1800 is decent.
1800-1900 is above average.
1900-2000 is good.
2000-2100 is great.
2100-2200 is awesome.
2200-2300 is amazing.
2300-2400 is incredible.

One could think about “good” or “bad” scores in terms of how many standard deviations above or below the mean score (~1500) but I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

1450-1550 = Average
1560-1750 = Above Average
1760-1950 = Really Good
1960-2050 = Great
2060-2250 = Awesome
2250-2400 = Do you have a life?

Too many factors that exceed actual score to determine “good” and “bad.” An 1800 could be absolutely amazing for a person that barely speaks english, their parents didn’t go to college, they are on the lower end of socio-economic status’, while to a person who’s parents are doctors/lawyer(stereotypes) who’s parents went to college, can afford tutors/review books, etc. an 1800 would be “bad.” What if a kid has to work 7 days a week just to survive? They’re not really worrying about SAT scores…

Anyway… IN MY EYES.

If it matters, I’m at a 1920-- looking at a 2000-2100 from my last sitting.

600-2400 is holy &#*@ you’re a genius!

Here’s my take on it:

600 - trololol, you literally have to try to get a 600. The probability of answering every question incorrectly is quite low.
610-1490 - meh
1500-1800 - alright
1810-2100 - good
2110-2300 - very good
2300-2390 - excellent
2400 - freak

“600 - trololol, you literally have to try to get a 600. The probability of answering every question incorrectly is quite low.”

I want access to CollegeBoard for an experiment as to the likelihood of scoring a 600 while answering every single question…

Also, all you would have to do is answer one wrong then skip every question to get a 600…

<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools;

And no, you have to get a negative raw score for 200s. (like -5 or something)

The probability of randomly guessing incorrectly on every problem is easy to find. (4/5)^n, where n is the number of MC questions.

Not sure what raw score gets you a 200 per section, but I’ve heard it’s in the -2 to -4 range (8 to 16 incorrect, everything else blank). Could be wrong…

@rspence, That’s the likelihood of getting everything wrong. I was talking about the likelihood of scoring a 600. Which could be done with correct answers if you answer enough incorrectly to get a negative score.

I know a guy with a 900 two-part going to William and Mary. Proof that SATs are generally worthless.

Imho there are no impressive scores anymore. My perception of SAT scores have been largely skewed. I really look at it with respect to what college people apply to; therefore 1800 could be really good or really bad. Without any context, though, I’d say 2000 is okay and 2200 is above average.

Below average for college:1600 and below
Ok:1600-1700
Good:1700-1800
Nice!:1800-1900
Very nice: 1900-2000
Great: 2000-2100
Awesome: 2100-2200
Amazing:2200-2300
Exceptionally outstandingly spectacular:2300-2380
Wow that sucks! I’m sorry…:2390
Please remember me when you cash that Nobel prize money cheque:2400

@CSGolfer15: Yes! Your one, frankly unbelievable anecdote is definite proof that SAT scores are worthless.

@SerenityJade, true, I think I’ve heard a raw score of -2 to -4 or so can get you a 200 on a section (could be wrong). If this is true, it’s definitely possible to get that with a few correct answers. The probability of getting that raw score from only guessing is still somewhat low, since the expected score from guessing is zero (with fairly small standard deviation).

600-1490: Meh.
1500-1690: Average.
1700-1890: Good.
1900-2090: Really good.
2100-2290: Awesome.
2300-2400: Amazing!

Why would any of these be “get a life”? You don’t have to study to do well on the sat… You could just naturally get 2300+

^That case is extremely rare.

^I know quite a few people who have scored 2300+ without studying. It’s not common, but it’s not that rare either.

It’s rare depending on where you’re from. I’m from a relatively well-off place that’s pretty academically inclined, so a lot of people have scores like that.
