Hey...I've just received my Toelf score and I really don't know how to feel about it. I've only passed two points of the 100-120 range of Andover (I got 102), which is the most competitive school I'm applying to .So, you guys have any thoughts about toelf scores and how high your score is recommended to be? I'm an internacional student btw, so Toelf is required.

Thanks!

PS: Applying to Andover, Deerfield, Kent, Hill, Hotchkiss, Blair and Concord

TOEFL. It may seem that I am being too picky, but I am just as picky with my own kids, who are skilled native English speakers. Getting the details right will show, in your case, that you are fluent in English and shows, in any situation, that a person is taking the process seriously. Also, if you are attentive to details, you are likely to do better on standardized tests like the TOEFL.

oh, sorry, I didn’t notice that, I wrote that post after an all-subjects exam that lasted 4 hours , so I was a bit tired; I’ll try to edit it ( :

@Brunnavillar, in your home country do people drive on the left side of the road? It’s cute that you type your smiley backwards from us Yanks ;)

Most of the schools you are applying to don’t have an ESL program so they will want to make sure you have a high proficiency in English. A score of 100+ in TOEFL is good but it’d be better if you could prove your language ability through other means as well. Are you taking SSAT? And are you interviewing with an alumni interviewer or regional rep? If so, make sure you ace them. The competition for international students can be very intense depending on what country you are from. Good luck!

@Benley I’ll take SSAT this saturday, and I’m probably going to have interviews by phone or skype, I’m from Brazil, so I don’t think it is competitive, like China for example.
Thanks!

GiaNghi, your toefl score is good for any boarding schools you’re applying. But if you are an international student, who is seeking 70-100% financial aid, you are not getting the results you’d like to get. Boarding schools are not generous on FA on international students at all.

Depends a lot on the schools that you are applying and if u need FA. But supposing u are applying to GLADCHEMMS and needs FA, I’d say–105 Toefl and 95% SSAT

You need to cast a much wider net and look at schools beyond the elite ones. Also look at the single-sex schools. Their admission is more forgiving than the coed schools.

To maximize your chances, you should be looking at schools where you would add something unique to the student body (for example, schools that currently do not have a student from Vietnam).

Also, you should consider schools where your SSAT score is above the school’s average.

It is doubly important for you and your parents to go visit these schools and interview IN PERSON. I’ve been touring schools this month w son2, and the admissions waiting rooms are staggeringly full of families from Asia.

Do you have an elite talent, high athletic ability, or special circumstance (war orphan)? This is essential for you as an int’l candidate to be considered for substantial FA. Otherwise, it is a futile pursuit.
