What is a good undergraduate major if I want to get an MBA?

Hello all,
I will be starting my first year of college this Fall of 2011. I have a strong interest in the business world, particularly the administrative and financial areas. My current plan is to complete a Bachelor's Degree with a double major in Finance and Accounting. After this, I'd like to go to graduate school to complete my MBA. In searching around online, specifically the class statistics of certain business schools, I have found that Finance and Accounting undergrad majors don't seem to be even slightly common among many current MBA students. I've seen a high percentage of MBA students with a degree in humanities... but this seems like a very broad field. I've also seen a decent amount of Business Administration majors.

My question is this: What is the "best" undergraduate major if I want to complete my MBA? In your mind, would a major in Business Administration with a minor in Accounting or Finance make sense? Any input would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
-Brent

Speaking as someone who did both this undergrad work and graduate work in business (BS in management and MBA with a concentration in production management), I don’t recommend it. You will likely find that your MBA program includes a lot of stuff you already know, because your peers will be for the most part students who did not study business subjects in college. You could probably skip courses like elementary accounting, but at most schools, you’re still going to be doing a lot of what is essentially review. At least that was my experience.

As for what undergraduate major is then best, I’d say explore some things as a freshman, then pick something that interests you. If my arm was twisted real hard to name a specific subject, for a finance and accounting background I’d probably pick math or economics. If you’re interested in international business, perhaps a major in international relations or a foreign language might be advisable.

You’re going to need a few years of work experience between your undergrad and starting your MBA if you want to get into a good program. So I would major in whatever will help you get a job in the field you eventually want to work in.

There is no best major at all. The better business schools couldn’t care less what your u degrade major was.
