Hello! I was wondering which college is more well known; Temple or Rutgers?
Just sheer fame? I’d say Rutgers. I’ve heard of Temple, but only mentioned once or twice online.
I’d also say Rutgers. It’d also depend on where you ask. In the Northeast I’d say name recognition is about equal. In NJ most people would say Temple was better; everywhere else, most people would say Rutgers. (NJ residents have this weird hate relationship with Rutgers.) Nationwide, Rutgers is definitely going to have better name recognition.
There is no comparison between Rutgers and Temple. Rutgers is a big time research school and Temple is not.
The bottom of the middle 50% in the ACT at Rutgers is a 26. At Temple it is a 22.
Rutgers. Better funding, connections, programs, all around student experience. The only thing Temple has is that it’s in Philly, but Rutgers is in proximity to Philly, anyway.
Temple is a research university, if not as renowned as Rutgers.
Rutgers. Rutgers is ranked higher in the U.S. News Ranking than Temple. It’s also more difficult to get into Rutgers than Temple. However, Temple may be slightly more well known sports wise.
Temple is raising its profile some with the automatic full tuition and similar scholarships. IDK if Rutgers offers those, I don’t think so. I was impressed with the Temple kids and profs and admin we met at an accepted student event there. Their provost (president? I forget) just came from UPenn.
I know my D, not from NJ or PA, looked at Temple because of the merit and honors program and because it’s in Philly, didn’t consider Rutgers at all.
YMMV.
Thank you!
Temple has a med school and pharmacy school, how can you say it is not a research university?
Rutgers may be more focused on STEM, but not sure.
I don’t think they give as generous of merit scholarships as Temple.
Rutgers is an AAU school, one of 62 or so.
I also want to say that Temple has some Arts and Media/Communications programs and opportunities that Rutgers doesn’t, with internship opportunities and a vital arts scene in Philly. Tyler School of Art does require a portfolio, but I think it’s larger than Mason Gross for visual arts. Mason Gross at Rutgers has some of the best BFA/conservatory performing arts programs in the country, but they are by audition and brutally selective. Temple’s Theater department is non-audition and was recently named one of the most underrated in the country. Their Film & Media Arts program does not require a portfolio and is also highly regarded, making it an excellent match or safety for students considering the ultra-selective film schools like NYU or USC (there is quite a bit of filmmaking in Philly, and its Film Festival has a rising profile). The Boyer School of Music and Dance at Temple is also excellent. It requires auditions, but also has more local opportunities than Rutgers might offer.
Rutgers students in STEM and life sciences have some exceptional opportunities for research and internships. Johnson & Johnson is adjacent to the campus, and there is a longtime symbiotic relationship between the company and the campus. Full disclosure: I have a son at Temple, but I live in NJ, and I have a lot of respect for Rutgers as a university. Unlike many people, I like the city of New Brunswick. I think Philly is one of the best places for young people right now, because it has lots to do and see, and is much, much more affordable than other big cities. The Temple neighborhood is sketchy, but students quickly learn where and when it’s safe to wander. There’s a lot of gentrification underway in the neighborhood, furthermore. I recently went to co-sign my son’s lease, and saw a lot of renovation going on among dilapidated older buildings.
What is your major?
Soil Science - Rutgers
Theater Lighting Design - Temple
Rutgers is in the middle of nowhere. Temple is in a city so its more common to hear their name pop in a conversation.
^^^^^^Really?
I would hardly say Rutgers is in the middle of nowhere. New Brunswick/Piscataway are two active cities with plenty to do. Plus Rutgers itself is the size of a medium-sized city.
Rutgers is not in the middle of nowhere. Being from NJ, both are prominently known and spoken about. Temple is more urban than Rutgers but I believe they offer equal educations. It’s merely a matter of personal preference. If you really care so much about what impresses people at barbecues, Rutgers with their glaring red R paves the way, but don’t discount Temple either.
In NJ, a lot of people would prefer Temple because it’s out of state, seems more like “ooh Bobby is going away to college”, and it’s not Rutgers.
Rutgers is better (4 stars compared to about 3.5 for Temple), but as a NJ kid, I would prefer Temple
deleted reference to a certain Temple alumn because it was in poor taste.
^^^So long as it wasn’t anything about Bill Cosby, you could have left it in.
