I've heard a lot of differing opinions on Chico state. Some people say its one of the best CSUs academically, others say its one of the worst. Some say it's a huge party school and you can only fit in if you're part of that scene, others say its socially diverse. some say Chico is an awesome college town with tons to do, others say its a boring place in the middle of nowhere. I want to here some opinions on what it's actually like from people who have gone there/ know people that go there, anyone got some info?

I’ve toured the campus a couple of times and have some neighbor kids attending now.

From what I’ve seen, in some ways, it’s all true. There’s a party scene at virtually every college, Chico is no exception. It is nothing like raging party days in the late 80s Pioneer Days when Playboy and MTV crowned the school #1. The dorms are dry/drug free. Repeated violations will get you kicked out. 15,000 people in their late teens/early 20s live within a few miles of campus. If you want a party, you can find one. Santa Barbara and San Diego have bigger party scenes.

The campus is really nice, brick everywhere and lots of trees and a creek. It’s almost like a bigger UOP. No question you are on a classic college campus.

Campus is adjacent down town Chico so, it really is a college town. Even moreso than Davis. It is a mid sized town (75k i think) about 100 miles N of Sacramento so, if you want big city excitement, you won’t find it.

You can look up their diversity stats on-line. It’s big enough that, if you can’t find some people with similar interests, that’s your fault.

It is one of the more selective CSUs and is well ranked by objective sources like US News (ranked it #5 regional college in the West) and Forbes. I know their business and econ programs are well respected. They offer an Honors program both in GE and in most majors that sounds interesting.

Tour the campus and you’ll get a feel for what it’s like.

If the drive back Chico to Oroville freaks you out (nothing there at all) maybe it isn’t for you.

We toured Chico State for Preview day and were impressed. The new chancellor was very clear that Chico had the party school reputation and she was working hard to make improvements.

The campus has a great feel, very much like UoP, only larger.

There were definitely parties going on around campus on a Saturday afternoon, but in my experience, that happens at every school. The area around campus had lots of good places to go, a nice BBQ spot as a highlight.

Like the others said, beautiful campus, huge party school. I almost transferred there but changed majors, it had nothing to do with Chico.

emprex: do you think someone would be happy there who isn’t into the party scene?

Are you going to be living in the dorms? I was going to commute to Chico and back home (about a hour and a half drive each way) so it wouldn’t have affected me a lot but if I didn’t want to live on campus. I am not a partier at all. I have a few friends attending Chico State who love to party and I didn’t see myself fitting in. What are your other college choices?
