What is Connecticut College known for?

One thing I have heard them talk about on their tours and information sessions frequently is their internship or study program (known as CELS) where you get a grant to complete a career related internship of your choice, completely funded by the college your junior or senior year.

It’s known for being a great school if you can’t get into Wesleyan. :-)

I heard its nickname is “Abercrombie College”. We didn’t know about it when we visited. My D decided not to apply because it’s too preppy. I guess she felt that Abercrombie vibe even though I had no clue whatsoever.

She was interested in the school because of the “you can design your own major” thingy.

Well, Wesleyan is known for being a great school if you can’t get into Williams or Amherst.

Conn has a very strong alumni network. Free music lessons. And the $3k they give you for an internship means you can approach an org and say don’t worry about paying me, it’s taken care of.

Any New England lac will inevitably have a strong element of preppy, but all the cultural subgroups of today are represented.

The class sizes are truly small. The labs are led by the profs, and no need for grad student led discussion groups.

I agree with @HiToWaMom. I was admitted but after visiting I decided not to attend because it was too preppy and because of the social scene. The college is very cliquey and students didn’t seem friendly at all. Barely any integration among different students The only positive aspects that I found about Connecticut College were the academics and the aesthetics of the college. Faculty is friendly, unlike the students; class sizes are small.

I thought Weslyan was super liberal. Why would Connecticut College be its fall back if it is preppy? I equate preppy with conservative and liberal with indy/Bohemian. Maybe I’m wrong…
