What is Drexel like?

What is it like socially, academically? How safe is the campus? What are the typical students like? Are the students here more focused on training for careers than they are at other schools? How hard do they work/how much do they party, relative to students at other schools? How strong are the liberal arts programs? How strong are math/science departments other than engineering?

(I wouldn't expect anyone to answer all these questions; they are just a starting point if you want to talk about the general campus experience)

Thanks a bunch,

MaryC

Campus safety: I'd say it's more dangerous than most campuses. It's a collection of buildings in the city....which may or may not be a good thing depending on what you like.

Honestly, the liberal arts program is week. The school is known for engineering.

Some other students might be able to better answer other questions...

I wouldn't say it's any more or less safe than UPenn's campus, really, if you're strictly talking about the campus itself. It is in a big city and everything that goes along with that, so you obviously have to be aware of your surroundings and use common sense and whatnot, just as you would in any other part of the city.

Because all of the buildings are spread out on different blocks instead of on a traditional campus, there's a lot less of a traditional college-type atmosphere, I think. Most students will live off campus (although usually in the immediate area), do co-ops in center city, and have a social life centered around just living in the city in general instead of being centered around being a student at Drexel. So students would be more likely to go to center city bars on weekends than frat parties, for instance. A lot of the students also come from NJ/PA and so they go home on weekends quite frequently.

I don't really know much about the math and science departments really, but I'm assuming they'd be fairly good. It's not really known for being a liberal arts school so those kinds of classes are going to be hit or miss, depending on the professor you get. You really wouldn't want to go to Drexel and then major in, say, English. The engineering/science/computer type fields are good and the art/design programs are pretty good. Really depends on what you're majoring in.

Thanks for the reviews; it's good to know these things.

i said "week"

oh my god.

Some friends we ran into at the engineering open house last weekend commented on the strong police presence they noticed on campus the evening before. While some might find this reassuring, I found it somewhat disturbing.

I would suggest getting a Concealed Firearms permit if your going to be in the city. Then go to the local gunshop and go get some training. In the state of PA a permit is about $20 or so.

PM me if you want some information.

shut up. No one needs a gun at Drexel, Penn or Temple idiot....

hahahahahaha

Why? If a law abiding citizen has a firearm how is it affecting you?

drexel does have frat parties every weekend though. it isn't just a city commuter school. if you want the campus party scene its there.

johnnydr87: I thought it was funny, cause you were talking about liberal arts. Hey, everyone makes typos, even yours truly.

Public Safety Alert

In compliance with the "Timely Notice" provisions of the federal Jeanne
Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics
Act
of 1998 the Department of Public Safety has been advised that three (3)
Drexel University students have been assaulted off campus by groups of
juveniles while walking in the area of Baring and Hamilton Streets,
west of
34th Street. The assaults have occurred over the last three days at
various
times of day.

The Department of Public Safety strongly encourages students to be aware
while traveling in this area and to always stay alert and take the
following
precautions to reduce the chances of becoming a victim:

Use well-traveled routes.

Walk with friends.

Be aware of what is going on around you.

Walk purposefully, briskly, and avoid becoming distracted with the
use of
iPods or cell phones.

Walk in the center of the sidewalk, away from buildings, doorways,
hedges, and parked cars.

When possible, walk on the side of the street facing oncoming
traffic. If
you are walking with traffic and a car going in the same direction
pulls up
next to you, reverse your direction.

If a stranger tries to engage you in a conversation, use discretion
before stopping to talk. It is a good idea to say that you are in a
hurry to
meet someone.

If you see a group of juveniles hanging around or coming towards you
change direction, select a different route, or go to the nearest
building.
Contact the Department of Public Safety to alert us to any potential
safety
risks to yourself or others.

Have the key to your home or car ready as you approach your door.

Have the Department of Public Safety emergency phone number in your
cell
phone. 215-895-2222

We encourage individuals to contact the Department of Public Safety at
215-895-2222, if you or someone you know becomes a victim of crime.
