What is Marquette like socially?

What's Marquette truly like? I'm a minority and what I've read from other websites is making me nervous about the school from a social standpoint. It seems that many people say the school is made up of rich Illinois kids who are spoiled and just are going to school to pass the time. I don't want to be somewhere if this is the reality. I know Marquette is not very diverse, but it seems it is VERY predominantly Caucasian. That's not necessarily horrible to me, but I'd like to hear thoughts from others.

Granted, I know what I have heard may be from people who just did not have a good experience at Marquette. But, can anyone offer unbiased insight on what the social life is like, what the student body is like, and how the overall scene is at the school?

I visited on a Sunday back in the Fall. Not the best day to get a glimpse of regular college life. There did seem to be more students of color giving tours and what not. I'm not sure if that was done purposely.

I liked Marquette when I visited. Didn't love it but it is definitely an option for me - they have given me a good scholarship. What is it like though?

Also, does Milwaukee get dull? And is the reality that the university is in a pretty bad area and it gets annoying with crime?

Thanks for any replies

I do not think this will be an unbiased opinion since I’m an alumnus and my S is currently a junior in engineering. We would be considered minorities and I can say that I never regretted my decision to attend Marquette. So far the same can be said for my S. Are there a lot of people from Illinois? Yes, but you have to realize that it is one of the neighboring states. Is it mainly Caucasian? Yes, but again you are in the Midwest. Are there parties? Yes, like at most colleges and is up to you to decide whether to invest more or less of your time in them (part of the process of going to college). Those who decide to go to Marquette to pass the time as you have heard will most likely not graduate from Marquette. Regarding campus location you will be in an urban setting basically near downtown. As with any city environment you have to have common sense, but as a city I would consider Milwaukee safe. Are there some bad areas near campus? Yes but again just like any city environment there are some areas you avoid at night. As for diversity for a private Midwest college I would say it is above average and more like average for private colleges in the U.S. If you have not joined the facebook group for accepted students you should and you can get a feel for the diversity of the incoming class.
