What is my likelihood of transferring from Sac State University to UC Santa Cruz?

Title pretty much sums it up.. I went to Sac State not really sure what major I wanted, but later decided I wanted to do marine biology. I could get more experience in this field from Santa Cruz, so that would mean I'd have to transfer. However, I know CSU's don't get high priority, I'm just curious if anyones tried to do so and been successful. What type of GPA would be minimum for even the chance to transfer?

as long as you have a decent gpa, you should be able to get in. give it a try, and apply. gpa should probably be in the 3.3-3.6 range for csu transfer (but you might have a chance with even a 3.1/2 or so)

I’d say, assuming you have your prereqs knocked out it’s not hard to get into UCSC

[University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/library/tables/table_50-2009.aspx)

take a look at UCSC, people with a 2.7GPA have a 50-50 chance at admission and it only gets higher from there. If you have all your prereqs knocked out, that number gets closer to 100%

People are overestimating your chances imo.

Transferring from CSU to UC is extremely difficult. If I were you i’d go to community college and TAG. that’s guarenteed admissions and you’re saving yourself a good chunk of change.

MortimerC is right, the transfer rate from CSU to UC is usually ~1/5 of what it is from CCC to UC, so if you truly want to go to UCSC you’re much better off going to a CCC first.

It looks like the mean GPA for transfers in Fall '09 was 3.14, and I would assume it is higher for a major like Marine Biology. Unfortunately UCSC doesn’t break down their transfer student academic profile into CCC and other 4-years, so anything beyond that front number is guesswork. Based on the other UCs, I would think that in order for you to have a solid shot you need a 3.5+. Take this with a grain of salt though =).

Another aspect to consider is that if you do end up transferring, you may lose credit for many courses in the process, as CSU classes often do not articulate well at a UC. So, while it is far from impossible to transfer from a CSU to a UC, it is pretty dang hard… and if you’re really dedicated to it then it really would be much smoother if you spent time at a CCC first.

Good Luck

go over to arc or sac city and transfer from there, you will have a guaranteed transfer. i didnt even tag with ucsc from arc and i got in with a 3.1. CC students just get higher priority.

that means you just need to go see the minimum requirement to be a transfer from arc, get that crap done, apply, and do your best for this next year. do it quick tho, because sacramento sucks, get out as soon as you can!

My son is a Geology major at CSU Sacramento who has just finished his Freshman year and now realizes that a UC such as Davis or Berkeley would have much stronger programs and he wants to transfer. Why do people think it would be harder to transfer to a UC from a CSU than a CCC. Classes at CSUs are usually more rigorous than those at CCCs and I would think that a UC would prefer a CSU transfer over a CCC transfer with the same grades.

My best guess is, because CC is a 2 year, for the students that want to pursue or continue their higher education, they have to transfer to a 4-year. On the other hand, for CSUs students, even if they don’t get accepted, they can still continue their education at their current respective schools.

@ lemaitre

you might think that but you would be wrong. it has to do with the way the california educatrion system is designed. Community colleges are designed to be feeder schools into the UC system, and there are unofficial quotas on percentages of CCC students which should be accepted. That’s the reason for programs like TAG and TAP.

Cal state schools are learning institutions, they are destinations unto themselves, with their own standards of admission out of HS. They are meant to give students a different experience than a research instution, not necessarily better or worse, they just serve different purposes.

so if you want to transfer out of a place that should be a destination, then you need stellar grades and a really good excuse. It is harder to do a CSU to UC transfer than any other iirc. harder even than UC to UC transfer.

while lemaitre is misconceiving the whole cc/csu to uc thing, i still believe the OP has a good chance of transferring from sac to ucsc, without having to go to cc first. itr really depends on the gpa. UCSC is not difficult to get in to. so coming from csu doesn’t make his chances of getting in way harder. if we were talking about berkeley or LA, then yeah-- it would be a good idea to come from cc. but we aren’t. we are talking about ucsc.

@ higherhopes.

Yes it does. Waaay harder. I’d say his GPA needs to be around 3.7-3.8 and it’s still not a guarantee.

Whereas he’d be in with a 3.0 (or less) from a CCC. And even then it’s a crap shoot. If you went that rout i’d advise you to shoot for the higher UC’s as well.

Santa Cruz
5,305 3,560 67.1%
California community college 4,470 3,197 71.5%
Four-year college/other 835 363 43.5%

this is 2008. So 1, It’s gonna be MUCH harder now
2. The four year includes UC to UC transfer.

With a 3.7 GPA i’d put his chances at around 25% compared to a 70% chance from a CCC. I don’t know what your definition of way harder is, but it meets mine.

I dug a little deeper into the numbers and whoa, something happened last year. The admission rate rose 25% for 4yr to UCSC transfers.

[University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/statfinder/drawtable.aspx?track=1)

So while I was generally right, it looks like we are living in interesting times, and for this year. i have no idea, if it stays like this it looks like you have a good shot.
wow, look at those numbers.

Accept% Admit%

2009: 72.7 80.3
2007: 48.0 30.5

did you like sac state? was it a party school? im asking because i got in and i wanted to know more about that school?

Hey Ocean, unfortunately this thread is over 3 years old and will probably yield you the responses that you are looking for.

As someone that comes from Sacramento, and lives very close to campus (East Sac), I would in no way say it is a party school. Nothing on the level of Chico. There is a party scene that you can have fun with though. East Sac is nice. Midtown is cool. Downtown is okay.
