What is Rose Hill at Fordham like?

Does anybody know what Rose Hill is like? how does it differ from Lincoln Center?
I would appreciate any feedback whether it's about the academics, social life, atmosphere, etc.
Thank you!

PS- also I here that Bronx is not a very safe place, but what is it like living there?

We just beat Georgia Tech at Rose Hill earlier this week and tonight we upset number 22 ranked Harvard at the Rose Hill Gym! National news. Fordham basketball is on the rise!

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2012/01/03/sports/ncaabasketball/AP-BKC-T25-Harvard-Fordham.html

The Bronx is safe, but like anywhere you dont wander around at night alone. The campus is gated. Its very, very safe. Excellent safety and security. Gorgeous gothic campus. Football (Vince Lombardi went here) and basketball and soccer and baseball and softball etc.

Nice dorms, lots of variety. 90 acres of green lawns and magnolia trees.

Adjacent to New York Botanical Gardens and Bronx Zoo. 3 blocks from famous Arthur Ave and AUTHENTIC Little Italy…amazing food.

Metro North train outside the gates, 15 minutes to Manhattan. Safe, clean and convenient. RamVan to Lincoln Center.

LC is a very urban school, in essentially one building adjacent to the Law School. Its near Central Park in the tony upper west side-mid town area. Its small. 1800 students. Many of whom commute. Very artsy.

RH is a classic college experience. 5,500 undergrads. University Church (historic), oldest Division I basketball gym still in use, the Rose Hill Gym.

No frats or sororities, but lots of clubs and honor societies. Very strong social life both on campus and off.

Fordham is an academic school. You will work very hard here.
60% Catholic. But about 25% diverse in ethnicity. Lots of kids from the TriState area but increasingly from across the country.

Fordham has upperclassmen apartments on campus in Rose Hill, which are new and lovely. Includes full kitchens etc.

You gotta see it to believe it. But its really a very very special place. And a very hot school right now. Will be top 50 this year.

My S is a senior at Fordham RH, so this is from a parent’s perspective.

First the difference between RH and LC is mainly that RH is a (beautiful) traditional campus with about 5,500 undergraduates. It is located in the Bronx near Arthur Avenue, the Bronx Zoo, the Botanical Gardens --maybe 30 minutes outside of Manhattan (which is accessible by school van, Metro North, subway). LC is a smaller urban campus located in the heart of the upper west side of Manhattan (right by Lincoln Center as the name implies) with about 1,700 undergraduates. The education at both campuses is equivalent although a few majors are only offered on one campus (ex. biology/business at RH and theater/dance at LC). Your choice of campus should depend on the type of college experience you are looking for. Both are great choices. My S loves the traditional campus at RH with easy access to Manhattan but that is a personal preference.

From what I hear, academics are serious at Fordham. My S has taken a number of courses he would not have selected on his own because of the core curriculum, but he has enjoyed almost all of his classes (there are always the one or two profs. you really don’t enjoy). Class size is small (30 or so in general) and his profs. all know him (he had no problem getting recommendations for grad school from full profs.)

As sovereigndebt said above, his dorms have all been really wonderful.

The RH campus is fully gated with security and the campus feels very safe. The area outside campus is not bad either – just don’t walk around alone and drunk at 2AM and you should be fine. Having Arthur Ave. (great/cheap Italian food) and shopping nearby is really nice.

My S is not a big drinker/partier but has an busy social life. Sometimes he and his friends stay on campus or go out in the Bronx – other times they go into Manhattan.

In general, there is not a ton of excitement about sports teams at Fordham - but that may be changing soon if the basketball team keeps winning!!! Go Rams!

I can’t imagine my S having a better undergrad experience anywhere else.

My daughter is a freshman at Lincoln Center. She LOVES being in the city. She is a theater nerd and loves that she lives close enough to Times Square that she can choose to walk there and back whenever she sees a show. She sat on the red steps in Times Square one day to study for finals. She also loves that she can get from her dorm room to her classrooms in less than 5 minutes, and doesn’t have to go outside unless she wants to.

She goes by Ram Van to Rose Hill for choir practice, and she says the campus is beautiful, and more traditional, in that you have to walk all over. And she has said the food at RH is much better.

thank you so much for all of your comments! i’ve never been near the bronx area, but i might visit it sometime in april :)
