What is social life like at Marist?

Hello
I was recently accepted early into Marist. I had a few questions about the school and it’s social scene. Do students ever mix or socialize with other other colleges? I know Vassar is in the same town, and there are plenty of colleges near by. I also want to know how big Football is? I have always enjoyed going to games, and tail gates, cheering on the athletes and I want to know how big a thing that would be at Marist? Lastly, I have heard Poughkopsie is a sketchy area. I would like to be able to go out and have fun, without going to sketchy bars and house parties that charge entrance fees. I don’t feel like spending all that money every week just to go out, frankly I think it’s kind of tacky. Is it possible to have fun while avoiding those bars and house parties? Are there things to do in the area that are fun and safe, possibly places to mingle with other students? Thanks!

Hi!

I am a current junior at Marist, and I am so happy to be answering your question! The social scene on campus is very exciting! On campus each weekend there is always so much to do, including movies in our student center, ice skating and snow tubing during the winter, and coffee houses! Vassar is in the same town, but usually the Vassar students and Marist students don’t see each other too much. We are a D1 school and we have so much school spirit. For students who are 21 years or older, tailgating is allowed in the parking lot near the stadium before the game. There are a few weekends during the fall that everyone goes to the game including alumni weekend, parent’s weekend, and the last game! There are many parts of Poughkeepsie that are very safe! Some students do live off campus, and the places they live are completely safe. The bars that students who are 21 years or older are in some of the surrounding towns that are near Poughkeepsie. There are a lot of things to do, though, other than go out! In the area, there is a mall, a roller skating rink, lots of diners, and movie theaters. During the weekends a lot of students stay on campus and hang out! I hope this helps!

Are the students very involved in clubs/student organizations?

Hi @overwhelmed2019 I’m a senior here and am extremely involved in many clubs and activities here. I would say that almost all of my friends are involved in at least one club here but most are involved with more. In my time i’ve been a tour guide for the school, played club volleyball, a ton of different intramural sports, took part in campus ministry, residence hall groups and several other clubs. My friends have started club soccer here, a dental society and are involved in some greek-life. There really is something for everyone here and if we don’t currently have it here you can talk with student activities and student government to start it up, let me know if you have more questions!

Hi DonCaf22, Thanks for the information. Does Girls Club Soccer still exist, and what about Womens/Girls Basketball? I’m asking for my daughter who currently plays 3 varsity sports in HS because that’s how she has met her current friends. She struggles with social anxiety and doesn’t drink or go to parties so I think sports is the most likely way for her to fit in.

My daughter is also in her HS Marching Band so maybe that would be a good way to socialize? What do you think? Thanks so much!!!
