In my scholarship letter they said the OOS tuition (before subtracting my scholarship) is 50k.In small print it said the total was actually 55k. It says the extra cost is “Other Est., Out-of-Pocket”.

It can be anything from travel to school /home to clothes, computer, etc. I wonder that the other required fees are. Does that include health insurance?
BTW - you can save on books by buying used and some classes have pdf versions on the internet. You can save big time on that estimate.

@costofcollege12 The only number we don’t have yet for the 2019-2020 Tuition Promise cohort is the tuition and fees. We’ll know that in July after the trustees vote/approve. For out-of-state, we’re planning on a direct bill (tuition, fees, room, board) of $51k, just to be on the safe side. At least we hope we will be on the safe side with that number.

@buckeyeinbama I’m not home now, but didn’t the financial aid package provide estimates on the 2019-20 charges? I’ve been assuming that would be very accurate. Is it sometimes not?
@lexluthor5 I guess I just prefer hard numbers to estimates, where possible. I hope that the estimate Miami provided ends up being close, but if you look back at the previous cohorts, some of the tuition hikes between years were substantial. For instance, between the 2016 and 2017 cohorts (going on memory here), the tuition went up by about $2,400. That was rather eye-popping, and it’s why I increased our personal estimation just in case our incoming cohort gets hit with something like that increase.
@buckeyeinbama yes, thanks for noting there were some years with larger increases, but do we know if the estimate was still accurate or not in those years?

My DD17 had MU in her top three. She was awarded a great scholarship and she liked a lot of what the school had to offer. She ultimately dropped it because of the huge increase. It was significantly above what we thought it would be although I no longer have the estimate that they provided. We expected it to be higher but the number seemed excessive. They tried to explain it away by the tuition promise that would hold constant but we saw it as $2,500 more upfront and a higher rate for 4 years in essence they were charging us 10,000 more for the degree than “Advertised”. The scholarship was generous but did not compare with the other 4-5 that she had. The other schools were going up about 1,000 -$1,200 year historically. It is a great school but the year that she was accepted the huge increase was a turn off.
