What is the best creditcard/account to open for traveling overseas, particularly in Europe, where I can avoid all the fees and complication like with atm fees, transaction fees, and conversion fees? Thank you.

It depends on exactly where you are traveling. Bank of America is great in China. Citibank is great in Brazil. Start with your own bank and ask about their fees. Then search the web and travel website forums (Rick Steves is an active one for Europe). You will find an answer in no time!

CapitalOne does not charge overseas transaction fee.

I have Chase Sapphire and they don’t have transaction fees. In UK Bank of America atm card is also a good choice because they have a relationship with Barclays Bank and have less fees
. I like for a credit card, that unlike with Capital One, I get points for purchases and airlines with Chase, I didn’t have to pick one or the other.

Thanks everyone! I’ll check those out.

If you’re going to be staying in one country, studying abroad, for any period of time, then probably your best bet is to get a bank account in that country. Certainly in the UK there are various perks offered with student accounts, such as free railcards.

Charles Schwab checkcards can be used at any ATM worldwide w/o transaction fees (or rather with reimbursed transaction fees).

Citibank student accounts have debit cards that do not charge fees when using foreign ATMs.

Is there a conversion fee at all for the citibank student account debit cards?

My daughter will n UK a year and is opening a Barclays account but also has BOA debit which is affiliated with them. She is partly opening an account in case she finds a job and can have her checks direct-deposited. The free rail cards if applicable will be very welcome.
She is an authorized user for my Chase Sapphire and that worked out well when she was in Europe for a class in May.

I have used Capital One for many trips. This card is the best choice, with low interest and no foreign-transaction fees.
