I am a senior in high school and I want to study a pre-med program but I don’t which of these universities are good for the pre-med program. Could you guys help me?
Honestly, pre-med is about doing REALLY well in undergrad. The most important thing is fit. Where do you feel the most comfortable?
If I had to rank the schools, I’d have JMU, VCU, and GMU ahead of ODU. The kids that go to JMU seem to love it. VCU is in the city of Richmond, but has grown quite a bit and has a med school. They also have a nice med school auto-admit program for undergrads that qualify… That’s pretty cool. Being that the med school is right there, you’d have some unique opportunities. I don’t know a whole lot about GMU except that it used to be known as a commuter school, but has grown quite a bit. GMU students do quite well with internships because of its connections due to its location.
Tell us more about you. What are your stats?
Have you been accepted to any of these schools? Have you visited?
Are they each equally affordable to your parents? What are they saying?
Did you apply to the BS/MD program at VCU? If not, there’s another path…
@mom2collegekids
I am living in Richmond VA. I have been accepted to these school.
And my parent they give me the choose I could go anyone I want it.
But I got confused and I don’t know which one will be the best
@ArcDad
I got accepted for these schools.
I got in VCU , but not the honor college.
And I still got confused for which one are the best for the premed.
And what are the best major could be good for thr premed.
Sounds like OP is in state for all the Virginia schools so they may all cost about the same for him/her.
Is English not your primary language?
So, are you saying that your parents will pay the costs for any school you choose?
WHAT ARE YOUR STATS? GPA? ACT/SAT scores??? We need to know this to give you the best advice.
Did you apply to the honors college?
As for the major choice…there isn’t a major that’s best for a premed. The best major for a you as a premed is the one that you LOVE best and will get a very high GPA. What are your favorite and best subjects???
Which of these schools have you toured?
ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS!!!
@mom2collegekids
Thanks for replying to me
I don’t applied for the honor college.
GPA: 3.9 uw I never have C’s SAT: 1350
My favorite subject all the course I don’t have a favorite subjects for me they all the same.
After I finish my senior year I will have 33 Credits.
I don’t have any honor classes.
I have not toured any schools, but I watched a lot of videos on YouTube.
Is it too late to apply to VCU honor college
@mom2collegekids
Yes I know it’s late to apply to VCU honor college.
OP, you can major in anything really for pre-med. Most schools have a pre-med program which is more advisory than anything. You’ll need a good science background, but most importantly for med school, you’re GPA will need to be 3.7 - 4.0 (the higher the better).
You should tour the schools if you can. They are quite different. Ask their reps about their pre-med programs, talk to current pre-med students, and look at their stats for sending kids to med schools. The most important thing you need to do is find the best fit where you can be successful.
Is it still time for applying to the ODU honors college ?
Can you visit? VCU should be easy to get to if you live nearby.
Pre-med classes are just a set of ten basic classes. The trick that you have to rank top 20% in each of them when most others will have the same goal.
Did you apply for FA at any of these schools? Have you rec’d FA pkgs yet?
Why haven’t you visited any yet? Will your parents let you??
I would wait until financial situation is known.
FYI…of the 4 schools, per year, VCU has the most med school applicants (just over 200), GMU has just over 100.
I’m not seeing an applicant count for the other 2, so that would mean that they have less than 50 applicants.
The problem I see is that they probably don’t have much of a premed advising office if they have so few applicants…but that’s just a guess.
As for a major, if you don’t have a preference, then do biology premed track/path if the school offers. That usually requires the fewest extra classes.
