What is the cheapest way of getting from Yale to Brown and back?

I’m visiting both in one trip.

Amtrak says $52…

Surprisingly, the cost of the megabus says $6 between Yale and Boston. If only there was a megabus in Boston…

If you can get to Boston by bus, it’s about $7.50 for a train ride from Boston South Station to Providence. I’m not sure what you meant by your last sentence.

You realize that traveling to boston first is going to add at least another 1.5 hours to the trip each way.

Are you trying to travel on a 3 day weekend or other popular weekend? Maybe try to find out through friends if anyone else is driving down there?

Greyhound seems to be about $30 each way.

Amtrak is more expensive, but superior in every way.

The cheapest fast way (as jake suggests) is to take the Greyhound bus, but the crowd can be a bit more rough around the edges than on the megabus-type services. It’s always funny how the youngins forget that the Greyhound bus exists. The yuppie bus services like megabus didn’t exist until like 5 years ago.

The cheapest long way is the megabus to Boston and then the T down to Providence. As i_wanna mentioned, that’s gonna involve a lot of extra time spent traveling.

Oh wow I see - thanks so much for all the advice! Yeah - I think I’ll just take the Amtrak then.

Just another thought: there’s also a Shore Line East that runs from New Haven (Union or State Street) to New London [very southeast corner of CT] for $8.50 each way, and from there you could hypothetically catch a bus or an Amtrak from New London to Providence. But that might be a pain in the neck to schedule, and would only end up shaving a few bucks off the price at most. So Greyhound or Amtrak is probably your best bet.

^I thought about mentioning the SLE, but the way Amtrak prices their tickets, I don’t think it would make much sense to do that unless you can find a bus from New London to PVD. If so, that might make sense. Timing on the SLE sucks, though.
