What is the Common App transfer essay?

Hi I'm a little confused as to what is needed for the essays for the common app for transfers.

Please provide a statement (250 words minimum) that addresses your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve, and attach it to your
application before submission.

Is that the essay topic? Should it be abstract or a story or should it be like:

"I want to transfer because I want a smaller school with engaging, small classroom experiences" etc something like that...

Or should this just be a general essay like the one that I wrote for my first applications in HS

also just to add on…

should the essay school-specific or just general?

I’m at the University of Miami and applying to Middlebury, Pomona, WashU, maybe Stanford or Duke.

CA essay is a general transfer essay that will be submitted to all schools you apply. It is impossible to change it after the first submission, so if you plan to apply to more than one school, do not make that essay school-specific. Some schools allow submission of another essay(s) in the school sepplement.

I agree with the post above classic mistake. I made that mistake freshman year. I would suggest if you want to make it school specific generalize it but add in the different school names.

It is the statement in which you give your reasons for wanting to transfer minimum 250 words

Anyone know of a place I can find a sample transfer essay…? anyone can send me theirs? obviously I won’t copy since my reasons for transferring are entirely unique.

Nah, that’s too easy! I think it would be more beneficial for you to draft and then work with an editor (or several) to resolve the problems. (Usually it doesn’t take more than two or three drafts before it’s solid.)

I’m happy to be of assistance and work with you. If it becomes clear after a draft that you’re really clueless (which I sincerely doubt), I’ll send you a sample of my transfer essays to guide you.

Alternate versions of the CA with different essays can be made and submitted to different schools.

How are you guys approaching this?

Because I’m contemplating on whether or not I should treat it as a personal statement, and lead on to explain why I’m transferring. Or if I should just be upfront.

D1 approached them very differently from her fr essays which were creative and gave an idea of how she thought and viewed the world. Her transfer essay was a straight forward statement of why she wanted to transfer and what she was looking for in a new school, just as it’s worded on the CA prompt.

D1? fr? I apologize, I’m not used to collegeconfidential lingo, I’m relatively new.

D1=first daughter
fr=freshman

Oh, thank you! Was your daughter successful in her attempts?

Yes, accepted to 4 of 5.

Oh congratulations! Great to hear such good news.

Okay thanks. I have ideas for both a creative essay (like my HS essay) as well as ideas of how to explain straightforward with reasons I want to transfer.

Can anyone tell me which colleges prefer?

In my opinion, a good essay answers the question and is memorable. You want the admissions staff to think “we should admit THAT applicant with the essay about X.”
