What is the "Good Enough" SAT score for Top Schools?

Hi,
What is the good enough SAT score for the Ivys and other top LACs that you don't need to retake?

I thought it might be 2250 but now I'm afraid that I may need at least 750 on each section.

CR: 720 Math:750 WR:790
Should I retake?
Any thoughts?

Haha, relax. SAT's only work to a certain point. The cut off point at most top school is 1900-2000. If you are above that - they'll definitely start considering the rest of your application.

Your scores are great, by the way. Don't bother retaking. Focus more on the essays and the total package.

Your score is totally fine and shows you're competitive. I wouldn't retake. Spend your time instead writing great essays.

what about 2200? maths 790 writing 770 CR 640(!!)

To jehangircama : Your scores are damn good as it is, though if you feel you will be able to do better on your CR then I strongly suggest you give 2300 a shot :).

To Hope1988 : I don't think you need to give it again as your scores are VERY GOOD as it is, giving it again would be a waste of time as 20-50 points wouldn't make a difference to colleges at all.

When I think about scores needed: I think a bit like this::::::::

Math - 750+
CR - 750+
W - 700 + (b/c not emphasized as much)

I think score breakdown is more important than the total score....

for example: Total 2200
Scenario #1
M - 700
CR - 700
W - 800
Scenario #2
M-750
CR-750
W-700

I personally think scenario #2 is better, but I don't do college admissions.

Honestly, to be in safe ground I think:
M - 750
CR - 750
W - 750

Just what I think for "top schools" anyway......

Also depends on major.

ex: An poor SAT math score for an enginneer will hurt more than a poor Critical Reading score.

2400 is definitely good enough anywhere

Good detective work SATs suck a lot. I didn't know that before.

for an engineer
is
800 M
730 W
690 CR= 2220
okay?

nope. you're completely f.u.c.k.ed and later'd.

Pardon my sarcasm, but the reality is that the world, especially that beyond college, is not looking for one dimensional people. When you break it down, the difference between a 770 and an 800 for a given question is what? 3-5 questions. I would venture to assume that the people doing admissions know this. So why stress?

okay,
easternborder, i know my scores are pretty good. but i heard that some schools like MIT and Caltech (even though i want to go to Cooper Union) have middle 50% verbal scores of 690-720.

sorry, if my post before made me sound like i was trying to show off... believe it or not, compared to some CCers, 2220 is just Okay ... and so i was just wondering if the 690 will hurt any

A 690, i think, won't really hurt.

But you know other applicants will have above that......
