What is the most important issue in the world today?

I’d think it’s poverty.

^Agreed. It’s the 21st century. The fact that millions of people live their lives without basic needs in this day and age is despicable.

I think that a lot of issues are intertwined, such as poverty, as you two had mentioned, and the environment, for instance. Overpopulation, poor agricultural practices, and extreme air and water pollution often lends itself to poverty.

You make a lot of threads.

Tough one. I don’t really know. I would saw political instability, as political instability leads to the broader social problems like poverty, war, etc.

The most important current event is Syria, and the havoc that will be caused in Syria. In my work with the Council on Foreign Relations (okay, I’ve only been with them for a year, but thsi is major!), this is by far the greatest threat to Western security. Even the CIA thinks so. (It sent in weapons to the rebels.

I can post a memo from the CFR regarding Syria, if anybody is interested.

Unhappiness/suffering in general.

Hot Pockets always come out way too hot on the surface and way too cold on the inside. Something needs to change.

Aside from the important stuff though, greed and the unwillingness to accept change are two big things that hold the world back quite a bit. And for actual current day “world issues,” poverty and the distribution of wealth tend to worry me the most.

Why do hot dogs come in packs of 10 while buns come in packs of 8?

Poverty is a natural byproduct of capitalism. No one should go hungry, but fixing poverty is inherently impossible.

Hot dogs come in packs of 8 back here :p

And why would it be impossible?

Global warming and overpopulation.

Are we talking current events or more long term issues? Because I’d say global warming, obesity, and poverty are definitely big-ticket issues, but as of right this second I think Syria is the biggest issue current-events wise.

I don’t think obesity should be made into a national/global issue. You can fix that yourself.

Some of the conditions that make it easy to become obese (food deserts, for example) are societal issues and not personal ones.

No one makes you eat at McDonald’s.

It’s still an issue, whether you can fix it yourself or not.

Yes, but I don’t want to spend tax dollars on some fatty that doesn’t have self control.

The fact that so many people have become ridiculously obese in recent years suggests to me that something is screwed up about society as a whole. Which isn’t to suggest that personal failure isn’t part of it…but I don’t think obesity is solely about individuals lacking self-control.

The #1 issue on this planet…

when the skin around your fingernails starts to peel off.
